Neighbors alarmed to see dog on roof then find note from owners with explanation

An Austin neighborhood has something rather strange going on. Imagine starting your day with a walk. You’d see what you’d normally expect at this time of the day like newspaper deliveries, people watering their plants, or going to work.

Then as you pass by a specific house, you catch a glance of something golden sitting on the roof. Then you’d ask yourself if you’re still dreaming.

A dog is sitting on the roof and is staring straight back at you.

Allie and Justin Lindenmuth moved into their home last 2012. Shortly after that, they had neighbors knocking on their door non-stop.

They’re not looking to annoy or disturb the couple. They just wanted to warn them that a dog – their dog – is sitting above their house.

But that’s just Huckleberry, more commonly known as Huck in those parts of Austin, usually is. That’s his favorite spot as it gives him a great vantage point to watch all of his lovely neighbors.

It all started when the couple started hearing noises from the roof.

It sounded like someone was walking or running. They dismissed it at first as squirrels but when they realized that the noises were loud and heavy, they just had to investigate.

As soon as they looked up the roof, a familiar face was already staring down at them with a big wide grin.

“He was standing there above me, tongue out and wagging his tail,” Justin said to The Dodo. It has since become a routine for them. If your dog has a favorite rug or a favorite couch, Huck has a favorite spot above the house where the sunlight hits him just right!

At one point, the couple had to put out a sign to all concerned neighbors.

“We had people knocking on our door multiple times a day asking if we knew there was a dog on our roof,” Justin told The Dodo. “Of course, we know! He isn’t very quiet.”

For those of you who are still wondering, Huck was able to jump onto the roof from the backside of the house. A hill right behind the house only provides about 3 feet of distance from the ground to the roof. It was, indeed, an easy jump for this athletic fellow.

The sign also explained that Huck is being watched at all times whenever he was having those roof expeditions. They told people that they treat him like a child – which meant he was only allowed outside if the couple is home and only if the weather is nice.

So what does Huck do up there, anyway?

According to the couple, nothing much. He just sits in his favorite spot and watches the neighbors get this confused look on their faces.

Eventually, he became some sort of local celebrity. Golden retrievers love affection and Huck is no different. He’d bark at people to get their attention, then stop when they wave back at him.

When they had a recent renovation that dug out the hill behind the house, the couple installed a ramp so Huck could still access his favorite spot. The couple said the decision was a “no-brainer” and they were just doing their part in keeping Austin weird.

Watch how this dog made neighbors call out his humans because of his roof-climbing antics.
