Mama dog is devastated when her pups pass away in a fire – then she meets a litter of orphans

Just like humans, animals care dearly for their young. Whether it’s an internal motherly instinct or the fact that they truly care, when a mother’s babies are harmed it doesn’t’ matter if you are human or animal. When one dog lost her puppies to a fire, she was heartbroken, at least until her owner came up with a unique solution.

Tragedy strikes Jennifer Woodruff’s family

When Jennifer Woodruff’s barn caught on fire, she lost more than a building. Living in the building was her Great Pyrenees/border collie mix, Daisy, and her seven puppies. So, when the barn caught on fire, Woodruff realized the puppies were still inside. Daisy, ever the responsible mom, tried to run back in to save them. Woodruff had to hold her back as the flames had all but claimed the building.

Sadly, Daisy’s puppies passed away and she fell into a deep depression. Woodruff noticed the change in her dog, especially when she would walk over to the barn every continuously and whine for her lost pups. Woodruff knew she needed to do something to help Daisy. Then she had an idea.

Woodruff’s sister, Jacque Barnett put up a post on Facebook. She told the story about Daisy and her loss and put out a call looking for some puppies to foster. Woodruff and her sister figured giving Daisy some pups to take care of, even if they weren’t her own, might help her heal from the pain of her original litter.

A great solution was found

This was when Lorna Murphy entered the picture. Her beloved five-year-old dog Chloe had passed after giving birth to eight pups. The women got together and decided to change their tragedies into a happier situation. So, they set up a meeting for Daisy and the puppies to meet.

“It was almost like it was meant to be,” Woodruff told Inside Edition. “It was crazy.”

As Daisy met the puppies, her maternal instincts kicked into overdrive. Before the women knew it, Daisy was feeding the puppies. Daisy ended up taking care of the puppies over several weeks. Eventually, the puppies were all weaned and most were returned to Murphy.

Woodruff got to keep one of the puppies and she chose the runt of the litter, named Benji. It is amazing how Daisy’s loss ended up benefitting a group of puppies that had lost their mother. You can find out more about Daisy on her Facebook page.
