Owners notice dog mom giving extra love to runt of litter
Some may argue that no matter what you do, a parent will always have a favorite child. Truth is, a mother will always try her best to love her children equally, but sometimes, one child might need her more than the others.
Don’t get us wrong, we’re not here to start a debate about motherhood. So, what do we mean by our statement? It may be a little confusing, but let us explain further.
This is a story about a beautiful white Labrador named Daisy Duke.
Daisy Duke gave birth to a beautiful litter of eight puppies, and she is very proud of them- however, her owners started to notice something different about Daisy.
They began to notice that Daisy was more focused on her runt than her other puppies.
This surprised them because, as we all know, runts are often neglected by their mother.
This is the sad reality of runts.
According to PetHelpful:
“Many runts need help from the get-go, but what kind? Because runts are small and weak, their mothers might ignore them. Mother dogs may be reluctant to nurse them or may just simply reject them right when they are born. This means that human intervention may be necessary in order to help the puppy survive.”
That’s why Daisy’s owners were shocked (and deeply touched) by their dog’s actions.
Instead of ignoring her runt, she loved and cared for it more.
They decided that it would be best to monitor Daisy’s ongoing relationship with her smallest puppy, and what they saw was more than just beautiful.
What they had filmed was then uploaded to their YouTube channel, Life with Labradors, and, sure enough, it went viral with more than 8M views.
Daisy gave birth to four black, and four white puppies, three days before the video was uploaded.
One of the white puppies was the runt.
According to Daisy’s owners, they first noticed Daisy’s sweet and loving behavior when they only counted 7 puppies and not 8. Concerned, they tried to find the runt and noticed that Daisy has been carrying her in her mouth.
She took the tiny pup to a safe place where it could nurse comfortably.
She was very careful of her tiny baby; she hugs her, gives her extra licks, and even watches her sleep.
She cared for all her other puppies as well, but she gave more attention to the one who needed it the most. We don’t call it playing favorites, but rather, we want to call it a mother’s pure love.
The owners named the lucky runt Lucy, who was slowly getting stronger, thanks to her ever loving and caring mother, Daisy.
Daisy never left her side.
She made sure that Lucy was well-fed, warm, and safe. She was a mother, a very kind, nurturing, and sweet mother who knew that her child needed her.
According to Daisy’s owners, “She has been the best mom ever.”
We totally agree! We even caught ourselves getting all teary-eyed with her beautiful and touching story.
A few weeks later, Life with Labradors posted an update about the pups.
They’re already 3 weeks old, and all of them are doing very well. Did you spot Lucy? Look at how beautiful and healthy they all are.
Thanks to Daisy Duke, the best dog mom – ever!
A mother’s instinct is to nurture and to give life. It doesn’t end after you give birth- in fact, it only starts there.
Daisy may be a dog, but she is one of the best examples of what a mother’s love looks like.
Oh, look at them running freely at 6 months old!
