Dog refuses to leave owner’s grave – then rescuers find a litter of puppies with her

The loss of a loved one is always devastating. And for our pets, losing their owner is confusing, scary, and impossible to explain to them. The bond between a person and their dog is so strong that dogs often know where their owner has been buried and they visit their resting place to grieve, just as people do.

There is nothing more heart-wrenching than a dog trying to cope with the loss of their owner.

In Serbia, the owner of a German shepherd got sick. The illness slowly got worse, making it hard for the owner to take his dog on long walks. The dog could tell he was getting more and more sick, and stayed by his side until the very end.

Tragically, her owner passed away, and was buried in a nearby cemetery. His loyal dog attended the burial.

After the funeral, she refused to leave the site of his grave.

The owner’s kids tried to get the devastated German shepherd to leave, but she wouldn’t budge.

They didn’t know what else to do, so they left her at the grave. They weren’t that close with the dog, but decided they would take turns checking up on her just to make sure she was okay.

The following morning, the owner’s son went to visit the grave and check on the dog. He found that she had dug herself a little bed on top of the grave where she was curled up.

He tried to get her to come along, but she refused, and stayed put in her little self-made den, close to her beloved owner.

The son found it unusual, and uploaded a picture of her at the grave to Facebook.

Everyone who saw this photo online was touched by the dog’s loyalty to her dead owner. But one woman was more investigative after noticing something strange in the photo.

Vesna Mihajloski thought there may be more to the story, and saw that the gravesite was close to her home. She went to visit and see for herself if the dog was still there.

When Mihajloski got to the graveyard, she saw exactly what she had expected to find. The German shepherd wasn’t alone in her den.

It turns out, the German shepherd had given birth on the night of her owner’s funeral. She had made the den on top of the gravesite as a place to give birth to her little of adorable puppies.

She must have wanted to feel safe and close to someone she loved, even if she knew he has passed.

Mihajloski told the man who had posted the photo to Facebook about what she had found. But he wasn’t interested in taking care of the dog and her new puppies. If he hadn’t noticed the new mum and her litter when he went to visit, he might not have been a very attentive puppy parent in any case.

So instead, Mihajloski decided to look after the dog and the puppies herself. She could tell that the puppies weren’t healthy, and the mother seemed weak.

She took the new mother and her puppies under her wing and nursed them back to health. Once they were better, she helped find good loving homes for all the puppies and adopted the mother herself.

The loyal German shepherd would always miss her first owner, but she now had someone who would truly care for her.

The original owner’s children had refused to take care of his dog after he passed and had left the mom-to-be abandoned.

How could anyone say no to these little faces?!

Thankfully Vesna Mihajloski was there to give some much-needed love to this grieving dog and her new puppies!
