Dogs are simply incredible. They are capable of accomplishing tasks that no human ever could. They can sniff out all sorts of dangerous things like bombs, drugs, low blood sugar and cancer. What can’t these creatures do?

One dog in the UK showed off her incredible nose and loyalty when she alerted her owner to a medical emergency.

Ricky and Alhanna Butler take care of their American Akita Keola like she is any other member of the family. They love her very much and she makes sure to return all the love they give.

Recently, the family discovered that Alhanna was pregnant! Keola was excited about the new addition to the family, but she felt like something was off.

She started following her mom around obsessively and nothing they could do would calm her down. Alhanna noticed pain in her lower back and thought this could be the cause of her dog’s distress.

She discussed the severe backache with her doctor and was told this was just a side effect of pregnancy. She did not receive any treatment and was convinced that her pain was a result of her baby’s development.

Her dog wasn’t as easily convinced and continued to follow her around like she was worried for her mom’s safety.

“When the doctors sent me home and said there was nothing seriously wrong, she just sat staring at me so intently that it really scared me,” Alhanna explained to Mercury Press. “I posted a picture of her doing this on Facebook and make the joke about the film Hatchi where the dog also does this and suddenly my friends all started saying I should take it seriously.”

The dog became steadily nosier. It seemed obvious that she was trying to tell them something. Alhanna recalls her dog’s distress saying:

“No one really understood how ill I was – but Keola did. She would nudge me and cry and I could never figure out why she had suddenly started doing this. Ricky said she was distraught whenever I went to work, when she had never minded before.”

Alhanna decided to listen to her dog and booked another appointment with the doctor.

She was shocked when she was immediately rushed to urgent care. It turns out the back pain was caused by double kidney infection and was completely unrelated to her baby’s development. It was a rare type of infection and she was lucky that her dog was able to detect it.

“Because it was untreated for so long, it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen,” Alhanna described her horrific experience on Facebook. “On top of that I had an antibiotic resistant bug that had only ever affected one other person in the U.K. It was killing me and the doctors told me that if I had left it any longer I would have died and more than likely my son also.”

Keola’s warnings saved her mom. Alhanna was able to carry the pregnancy full term and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Lincoln.

Alhanna named her son’s guardian angel Keola.
