Woman recounts dog’s heroic actions to protect her on trail during mountain lion attack

While dogs often hunt cats, this particular dog encountered a cat that it was unable to easily defeat.

There isn’t much you can do when a large predatory cat is around you.

During their day out, a mountain lion attacked Erin Wilson and her dog who were out on a hike.

They didn’t see it coming.

The 24-year-old was on a trek in Northwestern California’s forests.

California is a large state with a diverse range of topography. It has huge, populated cities.

However, California is also home to a large number of animals.

Coyotes, bears, snakes, and of course the cougar, also known as the mountain lion, are just a few of the wild species you could encounter there.

They were on a normal hike.

Or so they thought.

Erin, together with her dog Eva, got out of the pickup and started walking to the river.

“We got there and within like a minute or two of arriving, it was like attacking us,” Erin recalled of the terrifying moment.

Erin was petrified.

A mountain lion, which weighs about 132 pounds, is not a cat you want to wrestle with.

These cats often puncture the hide of deer and lambs with the help of their muscular forearms and fangs.

Thus, when Erin saw the wild cat, she knew instantly they were in a huge trouble.

Erin thought of her precious dog.

So Erin screamed for Eva when the cat attacked.

The dog then risked her life in front of the mountain lion for Erin.

She was competing against someone who was many weight classes heavier than herβ€”one that often dispatches stronger and more hazardous creatures.

Eva was easily defeated by the cat, who then grabbed the dog’s head.

It was Erin’s turn to save Eva.

Erin attempted piercing the eyes, striking, and hitting with a rock. But these attempts were futile.

She sprinted for the crowbar in her car.

Erin hurried to the road and waved at passing cars for assistance as she desperately tried to save Eva from a terrible fate.

Erin relayed the entire incident when one of the cars stopped to offer assistance.

Shannon was the name of the woman who had pulled over. She was instructed by Erin to arm herself with whatever she could and assist in rescuing the dog.

Erin had to save her dog.

The two started yelling and wailing at the cat. They didn’t stop until the situation turned around for the better.

“Eventually, it just let go. I think from us just being so persistent and aggressive about it all,” Erin recounted.

But things didn’t end there. Eva still needed immediate medical attention because of her severe injuries.

Eva first sprang up and raced into the truck, but this was not an indication that she was feeling better. Knowing how badly hurt the dog was, Erin wasted no time.

Erin thanked Shannon and said goodbye before getting in her car and recklessly driving Eva to the veterinarian.

Fortunately, both survived. But they were disturbed by that experience. Erin had to hold back her emotions.

Naturally, you would feel terrified and tearful when your dearest friend’s life was in danger.

At least now, the duo can resume their lives. We are just glad they got out of it alive and okay.
