Rescued dog gives birth in back of car once she realizes she's safe
On one fine day, a couple adopted a pup from the shelter but they ended up bringing home six more dogs.
You heard that right—from one dog to seven pups in a snap!
Rebecca Lynch, president of Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida, was in the middle of a vacation in Savannah, Georgia, with her husband.
Before going home, she opted to make an unplanned detour at a dog shelter.
“I know that Georgia has a lot of rural, high-kill shelters and I knew I wanted to save the neediest dog from a shelter before I went home,” Rebecca told The Dodo, “I had space in my car and wanted to help.”
A friend in Georgia told Rebecca about Lizzy, a little terrier who was scheduled to be put down. Someone had reportedly abandoned the pregnant puppy at the shelter.
The fact that Lizzy was heart-worm positive and had a fractured leg was even more worrisome.
Rebecca knew she couldn’t stand by and watch the poor puppy suffer any longer.
Rebecca claimed she was “very pregnant, afraid, and confused” when they got the poor dog.
So, to make their new family member more comfortable on the lengthy trip to their home in Florida, the couple arranged a bed and blanket in the backseat. Rebecca sat next to the dog and gently patted her.
“I knew she was nervous and scared and I just wanted to comfort her on the ride,” she explained.
Maybe it was Rebecca’s soothing touch or the comfy bed, but Lizzy suddenly began to labor.
“About an hour in, she finally relaxed and rubbed her little head into my hand while I pet her,” she recounted. “Once she felt safe and comfortable, she decided it was time.”
“She started panting and she got restless. I told my husband, ‘I think she’s in labor!'” Rebecca continued.
After that, Lizzy gave birth to her first puppy after about 20 minutes.
Rebecca assisted Lizzy, ensuring that she remained calm and that her pups were safe and sound.
Lizzy had given birth to three litters by the time they arrived at the clinic.
“She was a pro! We went straight to the vet and they said everything looked good,” Rebecca narrated.
However, just when they thought everything has ended, Lizzy gave birth to another puppy at the vet’s office, followed by two more on the way home!
“It was quite an experience and Lizzy was such an awesome little mommy,” Rebecca remarked.
As per Rebecca, the new mama and her six puppies will stay at the clinic for a few more days before going home.
They will be cared for until they are ready to go to their new homes.
“Lizzy is a doll. Bless her heart, with all that she’s been through in her short life, she is so loving and trusting, ” Rebecca said. “She is a gentle and loving soul. Pretty remarkable.”
