Rescuers rush to save missing dog stranded on cliff 20 feet above creek

When your dog goes missing, chances are you look everywhere for them. That is what happened when a yellow Labrador, named Mowgly, disappeared in Boulder, Colorado, while out camping with his owners.

His owners searched for him for three days without success. Finally, somebody spotted him in the most unlikely of places, on a 20-foot cliff overlooking a creek.

The biggest question was how he got up there? The next was how were they to get him down?

The cliff that Mowgly was stuck on was below an even higher cliff, while below him the water moved past with a swift current. Stuck in his position, his owners figure that he had fallen into the creek and had then somehow climbed up on the cliff.

Fortunately, he was spotted before he had been up there for too long.

Mowgly’s owners called the authorities for help in rescuing him, and soon three swift-water rescue teams arrived. From the local area, the rescuers included teams from the Lyons Fire Protection District, the Boulder Emergency Squad, and the Boulder Fire Department.

After arriving, the rescuers had to first wait for the waters to calm down. Once that happened, they were ready to get Mowgly off of the cliff. Crossing the water, they climbed up to Mowgly and assessed the situation. It was decided that the best way to rescue Mowgly was to use a rope system.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office:

“Mowgly was lying near a large tree near the North Saint Vrain Creek on a small section of dry land, surrounded by rock cliffs that left him unable to move further. Mowgly likely fell into the North Saint Vrain Creek but was able to crawl out onto the small 20-foot piece of land up a small shoot between the rocks near the tree.”

Rigging everything up, the rescuers then placed Mowgly in a dog rescue harness. This would secure the dog for the short trip across the river, safely above the rapid current below.

Soon, Mowgly was safe and reunited with his family. According to the rescue teams, Mowgly was calm the entire trip across the water.

After he was safely back on dry land, he was checked for any injuries. Fortunately, he had none, except maybe his pride. Mowgly’s family is credited with his survival. Without their dedicated search for him, his situation might have been much worse.

And thanks to the rescue teams that responded. Without their expertise, efforts to save Mowgly would have been far more dangerous. For more on this daring rescue, check out the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
