Dog taken back to shelter with note from the little girl who loves him

When a puppy named Rhino Lightning was finally adopted by a new family, he probably thought he had it made.

Sadly, though, not every doggo that leaves the animal shelter actually gets to have a forever home.

Some are even shuttled right back to where they started, homeless and unloved.

Through no fault of his own, the energetic brindle boxer mix found himself back at the animal shelter.

And it was all because he had way more energy than his adopted family could handle.

What’s a poor puppy like him to do? It’s not like he could stop being…himself.

Sometimes the family-doggy dynamics aren’t always a match made in heaven.

Deann Shephard, the director of marketing and communications for the Humane Society of Utah, explained to The Dodo:

“They felt that he was a little too rambunctious with their small children. Sometimes a family is just not in a position to provide the care the animal needs.”

Bear in mind, bringing this ball of lightning back to the shelter wasn’t actually an easy thing for the family to do, either.

It turns out that their little girl had fallen head over heels for the pup, and she was sad to see him go.

As a final parting gift, she wrote an instruction manual on how to take care of Rhino in a spiral-bound notebook.

Tears started flowing the moment staff members realized what she had done.

“Hi, if you are reading this, you must own Rhino now,” she wrote. “He was my puppy. I really hope he is in a good environment. I really miss him. I wish he knew that he was a pretty puppy.”

“Rhino is a really intelligent puppy,” she continued.

“He is a very amazing puppy. Rhino needs lots of attention. He loves people.”

She went on to say that Rhino’s new family should give him a bath at least once a month, take him for runs three times a time, and of course – give him lots of attention!

The little girl also had some words of wisdom about what triggers him, and what he really likes.

“Rhino is a good dog and he loves cuddles. Just don’t tease him with treats – he will start to bark like crazy, then you have to just try and calm him.”

He also hates kennels but loves sleeping under the blankets. And when he’s happy he’ll run circles around them!

She did have one request for the doggy’s new owners, though. They should not change his name, ever!

“His full name is Rhino Lightning, then your last name.” She insisted, “Please don’t rename him.”

It was very clear that this little girl loved this dog like he was her best friend when she finished by saying, “Please tell Rhino that I love and miss him every night.”

Thankfully, Rhino only had to stay at the shelter for a single weekend before a new family stepped in to take over. Even better, they agreed to follow the little girl’s cute suggestions!

Most importantly, he got the forever home he was always looking for.
