Smart dog saves dad’s life by alerting wife while he was having heart attack in his sleep

Dogs are very observant, especially when it comes to their family. A dog can often tell when a person is not feeling good and will sympathize with them to try and make them feel better. Sometimes, though, their powers of observation are so keen that they can save a life.

When Mary Lynn awakened by her German Shepherd, Lucy, one night, she didn’t know what to make of her behavior. Lucy seemed bound and determined to get Mary Lynn’s attention. Normally, Lucy’s owner wouldn’t hesitate to give her the attention she wanted, but it was the middle of the night after all.

There was really no reason for Lucy to be acting the way she was.

It was true that German shepherds are often bundles of energy, but Lucy was well-behaved and knew better than to wake her parents after they had gone to bed.

Mary Lynn figured it was something important, so she sat up to try and determine what was going on.

After looking over at her husband Eric, she knew exactly why Lucy had awakened her. Eric was in the throes of a heart attack. And without Lucy there to wake her, chances are Eric would have died. Instead, Mary Lynn was able to take action and save his life.

Mary Lynn had to act quickly, though. So, she first called 911. Next, she began performing CPR on her husband as she desperately waited for the paramedics to get there. As soon as the paramedics arrived, Mary Lynn let them in. They then put him in the ambulance and transported him to an area hospital.

Lucy is being hailed as a hero for her part in saving Eric. Without her observant nature, chances are her owner would not have survived his heart attack. Instead, Eric was able to make a full recovery, thanks to Lucy, Mary Lynn, and the first responders.

Lucy is honored for her actions

To honor her for her life-saving act, the Shakopee Police Department honored the German shepherd a month following Eric’s near-fatal heart attack. After arriving at the Shakopee Fire Department with her parents, Lucy was given treats and toys by police officers and firefighters.
