Every mom dreams of that one precious moment when their baby utters the word ‘Mama’ for the very first time. Sometimes, they get so excited for the moment to come that they just can’t wait for it to happen on its own anymore. That’s how Andrea Diaz-Giovanini felt when she was bribing her baby with food to say ‘mama’ and the dog jumped in to surprise her instead.

Patch is about the most adorable mini-Australian Shepherd you have ever seen. As the video below shows, he’s also one of the smartest dogs on the planet. There’s nothing he will let stand in the way of him and his treats. Not even his human baby brother.

Patch is a 10-year-old dog who knows his stuff. He knows, for example, that when someone is dangling human food in front of you, they usually want something in return. Well, he wasn’t wrong.

Andrea was wafting some tasty food in front of her 9-month-old son, Sam, on a fork. In the video, she gets the fork close to him and tells him to say ‘mama’. You can tell that Sam is just a little frustrated, not quite understanding what his mom wanted from him.

Then you have their hilarious dog picking up on all the cues.

You can see the understanding suddenly flash across Patch’s face when Andrea repeatedly says “say ‘mama'”. Just like that, he opens up his mouth and starts letting out low, excited grumbles. He’s working himself up to say the big words.

Finally, Patch gets his vocals in order and bellows out the word ‘mama’!

The dog howls it out so accurately that Andrea is audibly taken aback for a moment. Little did she know the fun was just getting started, though. Andrea wasn’t the only one surprised by the dog’s outburst of language. Sam had noticed the dog spoke, too, but he wasn’t as happy about it as mom.

Unlike the baby, Patch has his keen eyes focused in on the food that’s floating on the fork in front of him the whole time. The tiny Aussie knows what’s at play here, and he doesn’t plan on missing out on a tasty morsel.

When Sam realizes his furry brother is trying to steal his thunder, though, and his food, he decides that he just can’t let it happen.

Just when it looks like his dear mama was about to reward Patch with the food for saying ‘mama’, Sam totally blocks him. The adorable baby shoves his arm straight out toward the dog’s face and pushes him back from the grub that should be his.

No fur off his back, though, Patch instantly re-steadies himself, keeping his eye on the prize.

To be fair, Patch is a little further ahead than Sam when it comes to obedience. Not only does the dog have 9+ years of experience on the baby, but he’s also more experienced than most dogs his age. Patch is a service dog.

The Giovanini family adopted Patch after Sam’s grandma suffered a traumatic brain injury. The dog’s job is to take care of grandma and alert anybody if she experiences a seizure or other life-threatening emergency. Of course, that’s not to say that the sweet furbaby won’t make time to steal his little bro’s thunder and his treats along with it.
