German shepherd is absolutely terrified of tiny kittens in this adorable moment caught on video
Even though a large dog might seem like it would not be scared of anything, you would be surprised by just what exactly they are afraid of. While it is common for dogs to be scared of loud noises, the vet, or even going up and downstairs, few would place a kitten among these items. But that is exactly what one German shepherd is afraid of in a viral video.
Curiosity killed the German shepherd
The video starts with the curious German shepherd sniffing at some 2-week-old kittens. It would seem he has no idea what they are, even though the family cat is standing right there beside the small balls of fur.
Taking a closer look
His curiosity gets the best of him and the dog decides to get a better look. While they look just like his buddy the cat, they sure are small. Sniffing again, he approaches one of the kittens.
Getting the scare of his life
That is when the kitten notices him and starts to crawl closer. At a loss of what to do now, the German shepherd jumps back in fear. He is probably wondering what he has got himself into at this point.
Momma cat intervenes
The momma cat takes notice of the developing situation and moves to intervene. She places herself between the frightened dog and her offspring, letting the dog know that under no circumstances is the dog to do anything to hurt her babies.
The dog gets the message and sits stoically off to the side for the rest of the video. The kitten who frightened him in the first place is not backing down as it sits there and stares at him. I wonder how long it will be until the dog and kittens are playing together?
The video of the first-time meeting has gone viral with over 4 million views and 90,000 likes.
Introducing dogs and cats
If you decide to bring new animals into the home, you should introduce the new members of the family to the current animals in the household. Hopefully, this can keep any misunderstandings from happening. You can begin before the new arrivals are even in the household by refreshing your dog’s obedience skills.
You should also set up a separate space for the new addition, at least until you are assured that any introductions will go smoothly. You should also introduce the animals to each other’s scent. Do this by placing clothing with the other pet’s scent in the area where the other one is staying.
Patience is key
You should watch each of the animal’s body language when introducing them to each other. It is particularly important to look for any sort of prey drive in your dog. If your dog shows signs of this, then it is best to keep them apart. What you want to see is both animals in a relaxed state when around each other, which might take some time.
If needed, seek help when introducing your animals, such as through a relation-based dog trainer or behavioral consultant. Here is the video of the German shepherd and kitten’s interaction.
