Solo dog shows up for story-time at library but nobody comes to read to him
Meet Sting, a sweet doggo who volunteered at the White Bear Lake Library in Minnesota as a “Paws to Read” ambassador.
He was helping kids aged 4 to 8 gain more confidence about books and reading.
It was going great, until one day, the unthinkable happened – no one came to see him.
Sting had a pretty easy job.
He’d been volunteering at the library twice a month for the past two years, and he was really good at helping kids feel like confident superstars!
All he had to do is just sit like a good boy, and listen to young children read to him.
But then one day, no one showed up.
John Muellner, Sting’s handler, was aware that February was one of the slower months at the library.
“I actually knew nobody signed up that afternoon, but Ann the librarian was going to try and drum up some business,” Muellner told The Dodo. “And since it’s fairly close to us, I thought why not just go?”
Still, Muellner was hoping that there were some eager young readers out there who would pop in for a visit.
Unfortunately, Sting didn’t get the memo about the slowdown.
Which is kind of heartbreaking, because he was really looking forward to the bi-monthly meetups!
This poor pooch was seriously bummed out!
Muellner, hoping to bring some awareness to Sting’s plight, posted this picture of him looking sad on Facebook, and it went viral!
“Unfortunately nobody signed up to read to Sting at the White Bear Lake library tonight. If you know of a 4 to 8yr old who would like to read to a dog. Please contact the White Bear Lake library by phone or their website about the Paws to Read program. Sting will be there Feb 21st 6:30 – 7:30.”
But it turns out his sad face was actually his saving grace, as it broke the hearts of doggy-loving netizens around the world.
Once it became clear that Sting needed some help bringing some young readers to the library, the internet rallied behind him.
Pretty soon Sting’s reading workshops were fully booked!
Now everyone wanted to read to this superstar doggo.
There were even some adults who said they’d be willing to hop on a plane to Minnesota to make him feel less lonely.
“It’s been insane,” Muellner said. “I guess these days nothing surprises me with the internet. But the amount and with responses worldwide is a bit astounding.”
It didn’t take long for Sting to smile like a big ol’ puppy again.
Librarian Ann Wahlstrom told TODAY that “People are asking if we could hold the phone to Sting’s ear so they could read to him.”
As for Sting, he spent many great years at the library listening to young readers build their confidence before sadly passing away.
However, his incredible legacy lives on with his doggy siblings, Luigi and Sofia. The pair visit the library together, and they love listening to storytime as much as Sting did.
