Dog who’s skin looked like it was made of stone looks so handsome now
Unfortunately, not every dog can count on a warm, loving home.
Plenty of animals are homeless and are forced to survive on the streets, the animal organization PETA even estimates that there are over 70 million homeless dogs in the United States at any given moment.
Grinch was one of those dogs.
His condition seemed a lot more severe than other rescue dogs. His skin seemed to have turned into stone, and Grinch was barely able to breathe and walk.
He arrived at a local shelter in South Texas, and a lot of employees immediately compared his skin condition to that of a stone. The poor pooch had practically no hair at all, just completely scabby and grey fur.
Luckily, the shelter staff made the right call and called for some specialized medical back-up, because they wanted to make sure that this poor dog would survive and get rid of his condition.
They got in touch with Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.
They arrived at the scene to try and figure out how they could help.
When volunteer Randie Semel, responsible for the Texas team at Rescue Dogs Rock, first met Grinch, she was definitely shocked by the way he looked.
“He looked so sad and was in such deplorable condition that we obviously stood up and agreed,” Randie said to The Dodo. “Not only were we unable to tell what type of dog he was, but clearly he had been suffering for quite some time. He looked more like a statuary than a living creature.”
Right away, Grinch was taken to the veterinarian for a full check-up and treatment for his numerous skin conditions.
Seeing the pictures of him in terrible shape will break any animal lover’s heart, but the important thing was that he was finally able to get some help. Aside from his skin, Grinch was dealing with other medical issues as well.
Additionally, he was severely malnourished, so it was important to get the four-footer back to a healthy weight level.
After a month of treatment, Grinch started to get back on his feet.
He responded quite well to all medication.
His numerous medical conditions improved greatly as well. More importantly, as the days went by, his energy started to increase too.
After this period, the shelter staff decided that he was healthy enough to be put in a foster home.
Nonetheless, Grinch still had to deal with some psychological issues due to his period as a stray.
“He was really shy and scared of everyone who was around him,” Randie added. “He sort of backed away from other dogs.”
Luckily, his foster mom was more than willing to spend as much time as possible to make Grinch feel comfortable around people and other dogs.
His hair started growing back, and once he got better, you could tell that his personality really started to shine.
“He’s absolutely thrived in his foster home and he loves to play ball. He looks beautiful and he loves to run and play.”
Five months later, he looks unrecognizable.
Gone is the stoned dog, this fluffy and energetic pooch has made a remarkable transformation – both physically and mentally.
His time at his first foster family came to an end, but it looks like Grinch may have found a permanent home with his next foster parents.
“The foster family is absolutely in love with him,” Randie said. “He’s a very sweet dog. He loves all people.”
Grinch’s transformation is absolutely remarkable and just proves that hope is never lost. The smile and look on the dog’s face definitely say more than a thousand words.
