Dogs are pretty good judges of character. They seem to be able to tell the good people from the bad, even if only just meeting them for the first time. The next story is a perfect example of this.

In the story, a woman comes home to find a strange dog waiting for her. His reason for being there is hilarious.

A strange dog

The dog seemed friendly enough and looked well-fed and cared for. Greeting him, the woman went inside. But the dog followed close on her heels.

At first, she was taken aback, but the dog simply went to an empty corner, curled up, and fell asleep. A few hours later, he woke up and waited at the door for her to let him out.

The dog is back the next day

The next day, the dog was waiting for her again when she got home. And, just like the day before, he followed her inside. Like the previous day, he went to the corner, curled up, and was soon fast asleep.

When he awoke, following his usual routine, he waited at the door to be let out, leaving when she opened it.

Looking for an explanation

The dog continued to show up, day after day for several weeks. Finally, the woman’s curiosity got the better of her and she had to find out where the dog was coming from and why he was coming to her house to sleep. Thinking quickly, she wrote a note while he slept. Then, when he was awake and ready to go, she attached it to his collar.

“I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful, sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap,” she wrote in the note.

Letting the dog out, she hoped for a quick response.

Getting a response

When the next day arrived, the dog was waiting for her on the porch as usual. The woman was pleased to see a note pinned to his collar. Letting him inside, she removed the note. It read:

“He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3. He’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?”

It seemed the dog had just been looking for somewhere to take a break from his hectic life of play. Chances were that he hardly got any rest during the day. It seems he had found the perfect person to approach when looking for a safe place to get some much-needed sleep.

And while she couldn’t help his owner with their sleep deprivation problems, she was more than willing to let the dog continue to use her home as a respite from dealing with his owner’s children every day.
