Workers upset when stray dog steals their pizza only to realize she’s leading them to her pups

A mom’s love knows no bounds. Many mothers will sacrifice their own health to make sure that their children are taken care of. This is exactly what happened with one dog mom in Palo Alto, California. A pair of office workers were enjoying their lunch outside, when a stray dog snuck up and stole a slice of their pizza, leading to an unlikely rescue.

A shocking discovery is made

After the dog ran off with the slice of pizza, one of the workers called the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA who sent staff out to respond. The SPCA rescue staff were able to eventually track the dog down, making a surprising discovery in the process. Once found, the dog led them back to her pack of six pups.

The pups were in even worse shape than their mom and were on the verge of starvation. At only one-week-old, the pups and their mom had been living out in the open without any shelter. Fortunately, the momma dog, a terrier mix, knew that the workers were there to help and led them right to her starving babies.

“This poor little dog was struggling to survive on her own, eating whatever scraps of food she could find and trying to take care of her babies,” said Buffy Martin-Tarbox, Communications Manager for PHS/SPCA, in a KTVU interview.

The staff took the mom and her pups to their facility where they were fed, cleaned up, and checked out. Soon, they were in foster care with the next step being adoption. For names, the staff named them after the British royal family: William, Harry, Duchess Kate, Lady Di, Charlotte, Meghan, and their mom, named Queen Elizabeth, or Lizzie for short.

The puppies and their mom were vaccinated, spayed, and neutered, and eventually were put up for adoption, with Kate the first to go. Fortunately, these little pups had a devoted mother on their side, who did all she could to see that her pups were taken care of.

“This poor little thing was could barely even take care of herself and then to be so hungry that she goes and steals a piece of pizza is pretty phenomenal,” Tarbox said. “But the fact that she did that actually lead to her rescue.”
