Sweet senior dog surrendered near the end of his life finds joy in new home

Dogs only have a short time on this planet when compared to their human counterparts. That is why it is so important that they live a loving and comfortable life.

In some cases, however, owners abandon their dogs as they enter their senior years.

In many instances, these abandoned senior dogs don’t get a second chance at a life in a loving home.

Thankfully, Ace has a different story.

Ace was abandoned at the end of his life and he thought he had lost it all until he met a very special lady.

At 19 years old, Ace qualified as a senior dog. This meant, as a dog, he had come toward the end of his life.

If that wasn’t bad enough, when he was surrendered to the shelter a wildfire broke out in his area. Evacuated, along with the rest of the animals, Ace soon found himself 150 miles from where he had started.

A day after arriving at his new shelter, a foster parent, named Bonnie, stopped in to see him. Walking him, she realized how much energy Ace still had.

Despite his glassy eyes and graying fur, Ace pranced around like a much younger dog.

It was evident to Bonnie that Ace was still as playful and curious as ever.

He still has pep in his step.

Seeing his will to live, Bonnie took Ace out of the shelter and to her home. She intended to make the rest of his days as comfortable as possible.

To Bonnie, Ace had been through enough to have to then spend the rest of his days at a shelter. Her ultimate hope was that someone would offer to adopt the senior dog.

Getting to know the rest of the family

Introducing Ace to his new, temporary home, the pair took a tour of where he would be staying. She made sure to show him his bed, water bowl, and where he would eat.

The other dogs in Bonnie’s home gathered around the newcomer, greeting Ace from a distance.

“When I first brought Ace home, he was very aloof.” Bonnie told The Dodo, “He didn’t solicit attention. Didn’t seem to care if I petted him or not.”

While aloof at first, Ace eventually warmed up to Bonnie and her other dogs. Three months went by and before Bonnie knew it, Ace was playing tug with one of her bigger dogs.

He even started to show his youthful energy on walks, often leading the pack.

Soon, it was time for Ace to go up for adoption. First, though, he had to get some dental work and so his adoption was delayed.

It was at this time that he started showing Bonnie affection and seeking her attention. That was all it took for Bonnie to make a decision.

She decided to adopt Ace herself.

“When he first came up and put his head on my lap and started nuzzling me, it tugged at my heart. That is when I decided that I was going to adopt him,” Bonnie said.

Ace had grown to be a part of her family, and for Bonnie, it was simply the next logical step.

While he had started his newest journey abandoned at the shelter, he had found a loving home at which to spend the rest of his days.
