Colorado hikers rescue frail,13-year-old dog stuck on 14,000-foot mountain for 42 days
Surviving in harsh, mountainous terrain can be difficult even for a human. Imagine being a house pet and becoming lost while out on a walk with your owner.
Amazingly, one dog was able to survive for six weeks while trapped on a 14,178-foot mountain, also known as a “14er” in Colorado.
Chloe gets separated from her owner
The dog, named Chloe, got separated from her owner, Larry Osborne, and became lost while on a routine walk near the pair’s home close to Mount Bross. Osborne looked for his lost 13-year-old dog but couldn’t find her. He even put up wanted posters to try to find her. Eventually, after a month, he resigned himself to never seeing Chloe again.
“I was not optimistic at all,” Osborne told CBS News Denver.
Trinity Smith decides to search for a lost dog
A week later, Trinity Smith and her friend Sean Nichols traveled to the area after a report of someone hearing a dog barking in the area. And while many hikers who saw the posts said it was probably just a coyote, Smith could not get out of her head the idea that a dog might be stuck on the mountain.
“I had no sleep the past two nights because all I could think about was a poor dog stuck in harsh conditions at 14,000 feet,” Smith said.
Chloe is found trapped on a ledge
Smith and Nichols searched for the lost dog for two days and were on the verge of giving up when they heard a little bark. As they searched for the source of the barking, the two good Samaritans saw a little head pop up.
It was Chloe. It turns out, the poor, lost dog had become stuck on a ledge.
Nichols reacted quickly, reaching up and grabbing the emaciated dog. “I reached up and got her, and she got on my chest,” Nichols said. “We just slid down the rocks. She was so light; I could hold her with one arm.”
Once they got her off of the mountain, Smith and Nichols fed her. She had been starving and if she hadn’t been rescued when she was, chances are she would have soon starved. After Smith and Nichols had fed Chloe, they traveled to a convenience store for more supplies. While there, one of the employees recognized Chloe from Osborne’s wanted posters. Soon, the employee was in contact with Osborne.
Chloe is reunited with her owner
When Osborne heard that someone had found Chloe, at first, he was in disbelief. “I just started crying. I couldn’t believe it was Chloe,” Osborne said.
When he went to pick her up, Chloe immediately started to wag her tail when she saw him. Chloe, now only weighed 26 pounds, down from the 90 she had weighed before she had become lost.
“With everything going on in the world, there are still good people out there,” Osborne said of Smith and Nichols.
Smith stayed in touch with Chloe after she helped find her
Due to the couple’s insistence in looking for Chloe, she was reunited with her owner. Smith even got to spend time with Chloe over the following year, before Chloe sadly passed away.
