Dog swims out to middle of lake and rescues woodchuck struggling in the water

Dogs are some of the sweetest, nicest, and often most helpful animals in nature. Maybe that’s why we love them so much. They often seem like they are 4-legged and easily excited versions of really nice people.

It might not just be humans who have developed this opinion of dogs either.

It seems the word might be getting around to other members of the animal kingdom that dogs are an okay species to ask for a favor when in need.

Wally the Golden Retriever finds a woodchuck in need.

This story involves a loveable golden retriever named Wally. The happy pooch loves to spend time in water and was doing exactly that recently in Hickory Hills Lake in Lunenburg. Wally’s owner, Lauren Russell, spoke to the media about what exactly happened while her dog was in the lake that day.

“He was about 100 meters out and a woodchuck I think just crawled right up on his back and he swam back to shore with him,” said Russell. “We were flabbergasted. It was unbelievable. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.”

Wally gives the woodchuck a ride to shore.

No one seems quite sure how the woodchuck ended up in the lake but without Wally’s help, it was going to have a very hard time getting back to shore. Thankfully, Wally was only too happy to help. Russell continued to say it didn’t appear as though he was bothered in the least by the stow-away on his back.

“He didn’t even care,” said Russell. “He like took a peek back on his back and then just kept swimming.”

Wally and the woodchuck share a moment.

Interactions between animals of different species can be so fun to watch sometimes. They don’t share a language, they don’t even share many common experiences, but from time to time two animals from differing backgrounds can communicate quite clearly with one another.

Russell would continue to say it seemed as though the two animals shared a moment of communication once they got back to shore. The woodchuck would not have had the ability to say thanks, but some type of message was exchanged between the two.

“It came back to the island, hopped off his back, and then scurried away, and they gave each other a little kiss goodbye,” said Russell. “They like touched snouts, and then he ran away.”

Wally is a very good boy.

Wally was very brave to let a strange animal on his back as he swam to shore. He clearly is very trusting of others and willing to help. Russell continued to say that Wally is the best canine family member anyone could ever ask for.
