Spunky German shepherd is totally convinced he’s a bird
Just like humans, dogs sometimes like to play pretend. Take a German shepherd named Kai, for example. Even though he is a German shepherd through and through, his actions might make you think he wished he was a bird instead!
A former life as a bird
Maybe Kai was a bird in a past life, because ever since he was a puppy, Kai drank from a birdbath in his owner’s yard, especially on hot summer days. Since then, the dog has preferred the birdbath to anything else his parents offered, including a pool.
“We had a pool in the backyard, but he would always go to the birdbath to get a drink because it was closer,” Kai’s mom, Ashley Shell, told The Dodo.
Kai went from normal to extreme with his birdbath behavior
When Kai first started drinking from the stone birdbath, he would simply stand on his hind legs. After watching the birds play and drink from the bowl, Kai got the bright idea to do the same.
Now he hops right up in the birdbath and grabs a drink whenever he is thirsty.
Kai’s owner was able to get his antics on video
Shell noticed right away just how much Kai preferred the birdbath when getting a drink outside. It is when he took his obsession with the bath to the next level and started getting inside of it that she decided to capture it on video.
“I started recording him because he started jumping into it to get a drink, and I was impressed by the balance,” Shell said. “This video was the first time he actually jumped up and lay down in it.”
As Shell filmed Kai, she noticed how he approached the bowl and walked around it. Then, he hopped right up in the bowl and settled in. He then commenced drinking from the bowl while seeming to take a bath at the same time.
He seemed perfectly comfortable where he was in the bowl and stayed inside of it for at least 10 minutes before getting out and going on his way.
A dog’s ability to imitate others
Many dogs have a knack for copying the action of their owners and other dogs, so it would stand to reason that they can also copy what other types of animals are doing. This is inherent in dogs and is derived from their domestication by humans.
So, it is perfectly natural for Kai to act like a bird and use the birdbath to get a drink. Getting up in the bowl might seem a little strange, but who can blame Kai? It seems to work for the birds, especially when cooling off on a hot day, so why can’t it work for him!
