Dog left tied to hydrant with backpack of 'favorite things' and note from owner

In this world, there are things that we will never understand.

One of those things is the thought of abandoning a pet. Pets are loyal because that’s in their innate nature. So when one abandons them, they become confused.

It was something this Facebook user had to deal with when she was walking down a street in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Kylie Engelhardt saw a dog tied to a fire hydrant.

The poor dog was sitting alone with no shelter nearby. With her shape and condition, one can already assume that she’s no stray dog.

Having the same suspicions, Engelhardt decided to sit with the dog just to see if anyone would come back for her. She hoped that this was just a case of a dog waiting for her owner to return.

She noticed something else as she waited.

There was a bag next to the dog. The bag contained things and treats for dogs and one can assume that all of these belonged to the dog.

It was filled with food, treats, and toys. It seemed like whoever left the dog did so by purpose. Engelhardt, meanwhile, waited for an hour. She also posted the location and that she was already contacting the police.

When no one came, she took the dog to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

The dog, now named Baby Girl, got the care she need in the facility as she transitioned toward adoption.

“She is doing well and getting lots of TLC from our staff,” Angela Speed, vice president of communications for the shelter, told The Dodo. “She loves her walks, toys and performs an adorable ‘sit’ for treats. She’s a happy and affectionate pup.”

And while the photo evoked strong responses from people, not everything is as it seems.

In a separate Facebook post, the organization shared that they got in touch with her previous owner. In the end, the owner was left with no choice as she was enduring medical complications of her own. She tried calling shelters so she can give up Baby Girl properly but her efforts were in vain.

“First and foremost, we are so sorry you had to part with your best friend.” The shelter said in their post, “It’s evident just how much you loved her and we can see you did your best while struggling with your own medical complications and challenges of life. We see your love in the bag you carefully packed with all of her favorite things. We see your love in the way you secured her leash so she wouldn’t get hit by a car.”

“Rest assured that she’s safe, she’s getting tons of attention from our team, and she’s on track to finding her next loving family very soon. We wish you all the best and hope that if you see this, you can rest a little easier knowing your Baby Girl has a bright future ahead”

The gracious post was also followed by an announcement regarding Baby Girl.

The shelter shared that Baby Girl will be available for adoption real soon. They also reminded potential fur parents that Baby Girl needs support with her costly medical needs as she is diabetic.

Nonetheless, Baby Girl is currently on track to get a new loving home.

And we hope she will receive the same love that she was given and not be torn by disease or hardship.

We wish Baby Girl and her previous owner the very best.
