Dog left tied to fire hydrant with bag of 'favorite things' and note from owner
Baby Girl didn’t seem like she had been abandoned. The dog looked like her owner would be right back for her.
But that wasn’t the case.
Kylie Rose Engelhardt waited over an hour but no one ever came back for the dog that was tied to a fire hydrant.
“[I] sat outside with her for an hour keeping her warm waiting for someone to come back but no one did,” Engelhardt wrote on Facebook.
Baby Girl was tied to the fire hydrant next to a backpack.
When Engelhardt realized that no one was coming back for the dog, she opened the backpack.
Inside, she found food, treats, toys, and a heartbreaking note explaining that the owner was going through chemotherapy and could no longer care for the dog because of her medical condition.
The owner had no choice but to make the heartwrenching decision of leaving her dog behind.
The owner tried to find a new home for her dog and even called several different places asking if they would take her dog.
She begged an animal shelter who told her she could bring the dog but only after the 12th, which she wasn’t able to do.
She ultimately decided that she had no other choice but to leave the dog.
She tied Baby Girl tightly tied to a hydrant in a place where she would quickly be found and also safe from traffic.
“It was the worst, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” the owner told ABC 13 News.
Poor Baby Girl looked so confused when she was being tied to the hydrant. But her owner had to continue on.
“She was my life, but I know she’s going to be in a better place. I do. I hope she find a fantastic family. She deserves it,” her owner said.
Engelhardt ended up bringing Baby Girl to the Wisconsin Humane Society.
While some might be quick to judge and shame someone for leaving their dog behind, the Humane Society penned a heartwarming letter to the owner thanking her for doing the best she could.
“We check assumptions and judgment and bias at the door the best we can because it better serves the owners, the pets in our care, and the community as a whole,” Angela Speed of the Wisconsin Humane Society said.
Baby Girl’s story ended up getting a lot of attention. Once she settled in, Baby Girl was put up for adoption.
After a trip to the vet, it was determined that Baby Girl had Diabetes mellitus.
So, she will be placed with a family that can care for her medical needs.
In the meantime, Baby Girl is being well cared for by the shelter’s staff.
“She is doing well and getting lots of TLC from our staff,” Speed told The Dodo. “She loves her walks, toys and performs an adorable ‘sit’ for treats. She’s a happy and affectionate pup.”
