Deemed “too ugly” to find another family, dog was abandoned and left to fend for herself
When a dog is dumped, it is usually because the owner can no longer afford to take care of or has grown tired of them. Sadly, one dog was deemed too ugly by her owner and abandoned on the street. Fortunately, she had some good Samaritans looking out for her.
Nelly is brought back to Cape Town
Volunteers from Sidewalk Specials, a dog rescue that operates out of Cape Town, South Africa, brought the dog, named Nelly, back to the area. The staffâs goal was to get Nellyâs life back on track and hopefully get her adopted into a loving home.
When they looked at her, they couldnât understand why someone would abandon such a caring and loving dog. As far as they could tell, she wasnât ugly at all and her features hid a beautiful soul that only needed some encouragement to grow. Once workers thought she was ready, they put her up for adoption.
Nelly had trouble getting adopted at first
At first, no one seemed willing to adopt Nelly, as the rescue received zero applications when they put her up for adoption. This devastated volunteers as they realized the need for a stable home for Nelly to grow and thrive in.
The volunteers have to get creative
The workers at Sidewalk Specials had to come up with a plan. They started by filming her story and posting it to the organizationâs YouTube pages. The video gained over 440,000 views and caught the eye of her eventual new owners. After sharing her story online, she was on her way to a new home within a matter of a few weeks.
Nelly finds her forever home
Renamed Lilly, the dog formerly known as Nelly, would now have a chance at a new life with owners who loved her and thought she was beautiful. In addition to her new parents, Nelly also had some doggie friends and other animals to play with on the farm she had moved to.
Sidewalk Specials
As for Sidewalk Specials, the organization mainly works with rehabilitating abused dogs or rescuing them from shelters where they are in danger of being euthanized. Unlike most shelters, Sidewalk Specials has no true shelter but relies on fosters to provide a place for the dogs they care for to stay until they can be adopted.
Sidewalk Specials also works with the public to put on sterilization drives to cut down on the number of dogs that can be potentially abused. For more on Sidewalk Specials, visit the organizationâs Website, Facebook, or Instagram page.
Anything is possible through teamwork
Lilly is a perfect example that anything is possible as long as people are willing to work together to find a solution to their problems. You can watch her story in the video below of going from a dog abandoned on the street because she was deemed âtoo uglyâ to one who now lives in her forever home.
