Dog gives sweetest ‘thank you’ to the firefighter who rescued him from the roof

Dogs can get themselves into trouble just like people. Some might even find themselves in a situation that might seem funny at first but can have serious lasting consequences. This is exactly what happened to one pooch in Wells, Maine which somehow got stuck out on the roof.

The husky had somehow gotten stuck on the roof over the porch of a house. Worried passerby quickly called the Wells Maine Police to send help. They feared that the dog would fall off the roof and get hurt. After arriving on the scene, the responding officers thought it wise to call in some professionals.

Cue Captain Jeff Nawfel of the Wells Maine Fire Department, who soon showed up to help the pooch out of his current predicament, “The call came in for a dog stuck on a roof. My first thought was on the roof of a car, but I didn’t exactly know what was going on,” Captain Nawfel told WGME.

The dog didn’t look too distressed

As Captain Nawfel approached the home he could see the husky atop the roof, “The dog was pacing back and forth on the overhang over the porch,” Captain Nawfel told Inside Edition. “It didn’t look very distressed.”

The initial thought was to use a ladder truck to retrieve the dog from the roof. Some nearby powerlines squashed that idea. So, Nawfel and another firefighter used a ladder to get on the roof. Then, Nawfel worked quickly to open the window so that the dog could go back inside the home.

“It looked like the dog came out the [second story bedroom] window, so it was a perfect opportunity to put the dog back in the window,” Nawfel said in the WGMEW interview.

Back to safety through the way he came

At first, the dog was hesitant to return through the window, but eventually, Nawfel was able to coax him back inside. The 10-year-old husky, named Jasper, was sure to thank Nawfel with some doggie kisses as he was let back into the home via the window.

“Friendly dog. Kinda gave me a smooch on the way in the house and that was the end of it and I came down the ladder,” Nawfel said.

A video of the incident goes viral

The Wells Maine Police Department posted the video of the rescue to its Facebook page, where it quickly went viral. In two days, the video had gotten over 7,000 views.

“I had no idea that a little affection from the dog would blow up the way it has. It’s been surreal at best,” Nawfel said.

Breaking stereotypes

Jasper’s owner stopped by the fire station to give Nawfel a thank you card following the incident. Nawfel also commented on how the situation turns the stereotypical animal rescue story on its head. Usually, it is firemen rescuing cats out of trees, but in this case, it was a dog on the roof.

“This was a first in my career,” Nawfel said.

At least the dog showed its gratitude with a kindly lick. Here is the video of the incident as it went down.
