Loyal German shepherd treads water for 11 hours straight to save her owner from drowning
Dogs are known to be some of the most loyal animals on the planet and for good reason.
They truly embody the meaning of unconditional love.
Even if you are angry with them or do something to make them angry (for instance bath them or force them to eat bland food), they will always love you.
Heidi is a German Shepherd in Australia that demonstrated how devoted dogs can be. It was when her owner was faced with a terrifying, near-death experience.
According to Queensland Police, a 63-year-old man went overboard in Moreton Bay early in the morning.
A fisherman nearby noticed Heidi swimming in the water around 6 AM. The dog was along with several other floating items such as a wetsuit, fuel tank, and tackle box.
Heidi was quickly rescued, pulled out of the water, and taken to the veterinarian for a check-up to ensure she was okay.
During this time, a rescue operation for her owner was underway.
“Brisbane Water Police were notified of the discovery and quickly swung into action, initiating a rescue operation around 7.25am involving a the Rescue 500 helicopter, four police vessels, Marine Safety Queensland jet ski, Volunteer Marine Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue,” the police reported.
It was revealed that her owner had been treading water for fifteen hours. He was clinging to the side of a boat hours after discovering Heidi.
The boat had lost power and had filled with water the day before they were found.
“Amazingly, Heidi had been treading water for around 11 hours while her owner drifted in Moreton Bay for nearly 15 hours.
“The skipper was transported to hospital but was thankfully not seriously injured,” the police department reported.
Fortunately for Heidi, once she was captured, she was treated to some much-needed food and rest at the police station.
Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow of the Brisbane Water Police said,
“We would take this opportunity to remind boaties to plan for the worst when they’re out on the water.”
“Always wear personal flotation device and ensure that your safety equipment, including EPIRBs, are tested and in good order,” he added.
“Thankfully there was a happy ending to this search and Heidi was able to be our honorary PD for the day,” Bairstow said.
We’re not sure what is the definition of loyalty and unconditional love if this isn’t it.
It’s mind-boggling that the incredible Heidi had not only the strength but also the willpower to stay in the water for eleven hours.
And her 63-year-old owner is one lucky man, because who knows what would have happened if Heidi hadn’t been seen at all.
The cops only knew where to look for him because they discovered his dog first.
It’s truly unbelievable to consider what could have happened. But we’re just relieved that despite some serious physical difficulties, everyone is safe and sound.
This is a great reminder to always test your safety equipment and wear floaties when going into the water.
Life is uncertain!
