It is no surprise the connection that dogs make with their owners. Tin many ways, dogs come to wee their owners as an extension of their family unit. The same could be said for the bond that develops between dogs trained for a specific task and their handlers.

A viral video has captured the deep connection that can develop in a heartbreaking way.

A parting between friends

In the video, Sergeant Zhang Wei, a member of the Chinese military, is seen handing over the German shepherd, named Bei Bei, to his next handler. Even though Zhang is retiring, Bei Bei is not. As Zhang leaves the barracks, Bei Bei cannot stand to see his handler go and decides to take action to stop him.

Bei Bei tries his best to get Zhang to stay

As Zhang turns Bei Bei over to the next in line to work with him, the determined dog springs into action. What follows is a sobering reminder of the connections that one can make with someone they work with day in and day out. And it was all captured on video.

First Bei Bei tries holding onto Zhang

Bei Bei starts by latching onto the duffel bag of his former handler. No matter how hard Zhang tugs on his bag, Bei Bei won’t let go. Eventually, Zhang wrests his bag free and tries to make good his escape. Bei Bei knows what is about to happen and will have none of it.

As Zhang gets into the back of a jeep, Bei Bei’s leash is held by his new handler. Zhang gives Bei Bei a last few pats on the head as he sits in the rear door of the jeep. Bei Bei jumps up to try and convince him to stay, but soon it is time for Zhang to leave.

Finally, Bei Bei chases the departing Zhang

As the jeep drives away, Bei Bei is seen giving chase, trying to catch up with his departing friend. Millions of Chinese netizens were touched by the heartbreaking video, commenting on the comradeship between Sergeant Zhang and Bei Bei, and the heartwarming friendship that has developed between the two.
