Sweet dog dumped at high-kill shelter because of his unique looks finally finds forever home
It’s hard to believe that anyone could ever be less than kind to a helpless animal, and yet, it happens every day. Sadly, many people look at them like objects rather than the living, feeling beings that they are. One sweet dog received a hurtful dose of this treatment when he was dumped at a high-kill shelter simply because he wasn’t “perfect”.
The tiny American Staffordshire Terrier was only just 8-weeks-old when he was ripped away from his mom and siblings. Not for being spoken for or adopted, but simply because he didn’t look like the rest of the litter.
The sweet dog was taken to a high-kill shelter located in rural North Carolina in Lee County.
The shelter posted an adoption notice for the puppy and when Cause for Paws foster coordinator, Nicole Horabik, saw his photo she knew that she had to help him.
The adorable little fella was born with a deformed ear that looked much smaller than the one on the left, and he was blind in one eye as well. Though his former owner saw these as imperfections, Horabik felt that they were precisely what made him so perfect.
Horabik brought the cute dog home with her to foster until they could find a forever family for him. Once he was there, she named the dog Captain Morgan, or just Cap, for short.
After she got the dog all settled in, Horabik decided to share his story to Facebook.
“Captain Morgan (Morgan, Captain or The Cap for short), an 8-week-old American Staffordshire Terrier was dropped off at a rural shelter for his âimperfections.â After a full vet check-up, this snuggler (man, he loves to snuggle!) has a clean bill of health, despite having a wonky eye and ears that donât match in size. From what we can tell, he canât see out of the one eye, but can hear fine from the smaller ear. He also has a slight underbite, but again, we think thatâs what makes this love bug so darling! All that said, the vet doesnât think there are any long term effects or issues. Weâre thinking The Cap is the result of a very irresponsible backyard breeder, and we see his imperfections as perfection!” Horabik wrote.
Horabik also shared that since being at her house with the other rescue dogs, Captain Morgan had really taken a shine to them. A sure sign that he would get along great with any other future siblings he might have.
“Captain Morgan gets along with other dogs, and has begun his socialization with his foster family. This kiddo loves to cuddle, snuggle and be near is foster family, so we think heâs making up for lost time,” Horabik’s post continued.
Shortly after sharing the dog’s heartbreaking story to social media, Captain Morgan found his forever family.
Captain morgan acclimated to his new environment pretty quickly, and his new humans even created a special Facebook page just for all of his fun adventures.
The dog’s new family posts updates on what he’s up to there.
“Waiting by the door for our walk. I discovered today Iâm no longer upset/angry that someone dumped him with the thought he wasnât perfect. This big, slobbering, baby cow is beyond wonderful. I am now, sincerely thankful they did! Our family is blessed to share our lives with him,” reads one of the posts.
Cause for Paws is a truly heroic organization that has saved countless animals from untimely and unnecessary deaths. This puppy is yet another that they can add to the list.
Captain Morgan may not look like the perfectly stamped, cookie-cutter mold of his breed, but we agree with Horabik that that is why he is so perfect! If you’d like to help support Cause and Paws or adopt an animal, you can find out how to do so here.
