Dad’s camera catches dog using toddler’s training potty without ever being trained
The common potty training chair has been helping parents potty train their children for years. This innovative device sits close to the floor making it easy for your young child to access and use. Now, it would seem, pets are also trying to get in on the action.
The difficulties in potty training
Potty training your child can be a difficult experience. It is human nature to want to avoid change, so getting your child to sit on a potty chair and actually use it can be a chore within itself. Now, imagine trying to get your pet to do the same.
One dog has proven that you don’t even have to ask him to use the toilet, even without training.
A surprising discovery
It all started when a Lakeside California dog owner came home from work to discover something in his child’s potty chair.
“I got home from work at 5 a.m. and noticed poop in my son’s training toilet and thought, ‘That’s weird, how did my wife miss this?’” the dog owner told People. “I checked the cameras and this is what I found.”
The footage doesn’t lie.
In the footage, the owner caught his large dog walking up to their son’s small potty chair.
At first, it seems that the dog was looking for something, but soon it became evident what the dog was really up to.
Before long, the large dog stands over the potty and uses the bathroom. According to the dog owner, the family had never trained the dog to use the potty and so the action was something the dog had picked up through observing their son do.
Teaching your dog how to use the toilet
The bigger question is why isn’t training your dog to use the toilet more common?
It would definitely save many late-night trips outdoors so that your dog could do his or her business. Plus, it would keep you from having to pick up anything left behind in the yard or after a walk.
Fortunately, you can train a dog to use the toilet. All you need to do is train them to use the bathroom on command (easier said than done) and to be more targeted in their attempts to use the bathroom. You should also provide them some way, such as a stool to access the toilet.
Dogs never cease to amaze
Next, place a child’s potty seat on the toilet to give them more room to stand when using the toilet. Eventually, as they learn to go to the bathroom using the child seat, remove it so that they are now using the toilet without the aid of the child seat. Now, if you could only teach your dog to flush.
