After being adopted, loyal dog waits by late owner’s bedside unaware of what happened

There are many animals that connect and form strong bonds to humans, but dogs are the first among them. Their love can also be a lot more intense. While in general, this is a wonderful thing, sometimes it can take a serious toll on them, like it did on a dog named Moose.

Moose had formed an incredibly strong bond to his dad, who adopted the dog from the Eleventh Hour Rescue, an animal rescue group based out of New Jersey. He came to the shelter and fell in love with the then 2-year-old pup almost instantly.

“While at our rescue, Moose made lots of friends with the volunteers. We were won over by his happy personality and his love for life. We were all rooting for Moose to find his perfect home. And then one day, his “dad” discovered him and they fell in love. Moose finally had a loving home of his own,” the rescue group wrote.

Tragically, that loving home wouldn’t last forever for the love-struck dog.

Moose’s human received a cancer diagnosis and died just one year after adopting him.

The devoted dog refused to accept that his human was gone, though. He waited and waited by his dad’s hospital bed but, of course, he would not return. Moose was absolutely devastated.

“Moose sat patiently next to his dad’s hospital bed, waiting for him to return, not knowing that “Dad” had passed away,” writes Eleventh Hour Rescue in a Facebook post.

All of the staff and volunteers from the rescue were crushed when they heard the news. They quickly organized to bring the heartbroken dog back to the shelter.

The rescue has a saying: “Once an Eleventh Hour dog, Always and Eleventh Hour dog.”

“When the owner passes away, Eleventh Hour’s policy is we take the dogs back no matter what. We never in a million years thought that this would happen,” explains one of the rescue’s executive committee members, Linda Barish, to GoodMorningAmerica.

It broke their hearts to see Moose back at the shelter. The dog had already been through so much before being adopted. He had originally been found in 2017 tied to a railroad sign in front of a kill shelter in Georgia.

“Moose was at that shelter for many months and during that time he had no interest from adopters. This was very unfortunate for Moose. You see, the longer a dog sits at a kill shelter, the closer they get to being euthanized due to overcrowding. Luckily for Moose, a local shelter volunteer was determined to not let that be his fate,” the post continues.

Thankfully, the shelter volunteer reached out to a Georgia branch for the rescue to have him transferred to EHR in New Jersey, where he had met his dad.

The shelter was determined to make sure that Moose wouldn’t have to wait so long to find a family, as before.

They posted the picture of the sweet dog standing by the hospital bed with a beautiful caption, explaining his entire story. Thankfully, the post worked! Within hours of posting, his photo had been shared hundreds of times. so much so, that the shelter even posted an update thanking everyone for their efforts.

“*** 6/19/19 Update ***
Thanks to so many kind and caring people who have shared this post, Moose’s story has gone VIRAL and he has received several adoption applications!. We are confident we will find Moose the perfect, loving, forever home he deserves! Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts! We wish all of our dogs had the same chance at finding a home as Moose does now!”

It didn’t take very long for Moose to get adopted this time, hopefully into his forever family.
