Loyal dog sits outside hospital for 4 months – he was waiting for his deceased friend
Many dogs are loyal to their owners to a fault. But who can blame them? We feed them and give them the love and companionship that they seek – not to mention a dry, warm place to sleep at night. Some dogs, though, like the one in this next story, take sticking by their owner’s side to the next level.
A dog keeps a lonely vigil
Lawyer Cristine Sardella had gone to the hospital for a doctor’s appointment. While she was there, she noticed a stray dog sitting in the doorway out front. And while stray animals are nothing new in Brazil, there was something different about the one sitting outside the hospital in the city of Sao Paulo.
The dog seemed to be waiting for someone, but who?
He had a look of sadness on his face and seemed determined to stay where he was. It was almost as if he was waiting for someone, maybe his owner, to return.
“He would get up to let people pass by, very politely, and then lay right back down again,” Sardella told The Dodo. “He was educated and tame.”
The dog’s owner had died at the hospital
Sardella learned the truth after speaking to the hospital employees inside. The dog was not a stray. He belonged to a man who had been admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, the man had died. The dog, unaware of his owner’s death, had been waiting for his owner to return.
The dog had been waiting for his owner’s return for 4 months
Most amazing was the fact that the dog had been outside the hospital door for four whole months. Workers at the hospital had been feeding the dog and giving him water. Sardella took the initiative and spread the word about the dog and his predicament on social media. Unable to take the dog in herself, she hoped that a kind soul would see her post and give him a home.
“It’s sad to know that he will never see his owner again and will not understand what happened,” Sardella said. “The only thing left is to wait at the last place where he saw him.”
Soon, a local rescuer was able to take the dog to a shelter in the city. Everything was set for him to go into a new home.
Incredibly, however, the dog escaped and immediately returned to his spot in front of the hospital doors. Seeing that he was determined to continue his vigil for his lost owner, hospital staff decided to let him stay.
When the dog has finished grieving, a hospital worker plans to adopt him. While they wait, the hospital will get the dog a vet exam and vaccinations. This story just goes to show the loyalty and love this dog has for his former owner – even though he hasn’t seen him for such a long time.
