Determined dog walks 2 miles on a broken leg to lead rescuers on life-saving mission

Mothers will go to great lengths to protect their children.

A greyhound named Vera demonstrated this when she led rescuers over 2 miles on a broken leg to her puppies.

Vera was found wandering around the streets of Spain. Her front leg had been badly broken. The bone had been snapped through clean.

Every step she took was agony but Vera needed to get help to her young.

That’s what good mothers do.

Lianne Powell found Vera near a market.

She immediately took her to a veterinarian’s office.

When Vera arrived at the office, veterinarian Ellen Sobry noticed that she was producing milk. This let the veterinarian know that Vera had recently given birth.

‘She had a broken leg, was bleeding from the back end and I saw she had milk, so I thought “well where are the puppies?” Sobry asked.

Sobry put a cast on Vera’s leg but she knew that somewhere out there the greyhound’s puppies were without their mother.

With Vera’s leg in a cast, she put a leash on the momma dog and took her outside to see if she would lead them to her puppies. Powell came along with Vera and Sobry as well

Vera heads toward her puppies.

As soon as the three of them got outside, it was clear Vera had somewhere very specific she wanted to go.

Powell and Sobry knew that this was their only chance to find her puppies, and if they didn’t get to them soon then they would likely starve to death.

“Clearly, we had a decision to make,” Lianne told The Daily Mail. “If there were pups they would slowly starve to death unless we found them. We would need the greyhound’s help but we didn’t know if she would trust us enough to take us there.”

As it turns out, Vera did trust Sobry and Powell.

‘We put a collar and long lead on her and took her back to the market. Then we just followed her for about 3km – she knew where she was going,” Sobry continued.

Vera treks along on a broken leg.

Despite having a badly broken leg, Vera walked for almost 2 miles. They cut across backstreets, main roads, and through the mud.

Nothing was going to stop her from getting to her puppies, however. Eventually, the 3 reached an abandoned house.

A broken-down car was on the property and in the backseat were 10 puppies taking a nap.

The puppies were all healthy.

And they were very excited to see their mother.

Thankfully, Vera had not been separated from her puppies for more than a few hours and they were all healthy and happy to see that their mother had returned.

“She led us to them, it was incredible – I couldn’t believe what I saw,” Sobry told The Daily Mail. “’That dog didn’t know us, we’d only met her like an hour before so it was really incredible how she decided to trust and show us where they were.”

Vera and her puppies were brought back to the vet’s office where they were all deemed to be healthy.

Sobry contacted Ibiza Hound Rescue who were able to find homes for Vera and all 10 of her puppies. What an amazing journey Vera went on to save her little ones.

She is truly a hero, and so are Sobry and Powell for going out of their way to ensure the health and safety of the mamma dog and her puppies.
