Dog abandoned by family on the street — refuses to leave her favorite item behind
When a family gets a dog, the hope is that the pet becomes a valued member of the home and lives many happy years with their owners, but that is not always the case. Sometimes, people decide for one reason or another that they no longer can keep their pet.
The best outcome, if this happens, is that the family takes the dog to the local animal shelter so that they can find a new home. Sometimes, though, the dog is simply abandoned on the street, left to wonder what happened to the ones that they loved.
Left in the cold and rain
That is exactly what happened to a poor pit bull abandoned by her family when they decided to move on New Year’s Eve. Worst of all, her former owners didn’t even leave her any food or water.
All she was found with was an old blanket, along with some other unwanted items that they left on the curb.
The dog won’t leave her blanket
The blanket must have meant something special to the dog as she insisted on clinging to this last remnant of her former life even in the rain and cold. And that is how Marina Tarashevska found her while out on a walk one day. Tarashevska is the co-founder of a Dallas, Texas, rescue organization, called Dallas DogRRR.
“It was really cold and rainy, and the dog was lying on her blanket — and she wouldn’t leave it,” Patti Dawson, executive director of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo. “I think she was still thinking her family would come back. She was in that stage of, ‘I’ll just wait here. This is familiar.’”
The dog had been deliberately abandoned by her family
After asking around, Tarashevska found out that the dog had been deliberately abandoned by her owners. So she decided that she would try and help the poor dog. But first Tarashevska had to convince the dog to come with her, which in itself was a chore.
“Anytime Marina got close to that blanket, she would run off,” Dawson said.
Tarashevska was able to coax the dog back to her home
Tarashevska did notice that every time she backed off, the dog came right back to the blanket. So, grabbing the blanket, she dragged it slowly down the alley to her home, which was thankfully nearby. In all, it took Tarashevska about an hour to pull the blanket, inch by inch, to her backyard. Once she had the dog confined, she grabbed her and put her in a kennel.
A new name and a new life
Naming the dog Camilla, Tarashevska tried to give her a thorough looking over but noticed that every time she touched her, she would become frozen in fear. That is when she noticed several fresh wounds on Camilla’s neck and ears.
It looked like she might have been abused in addition to being abandoned. Tarashevska took Camilla to the vet to get checked out.
“The vet said it was an embedded collar, meaning she was probably kept outside,” Dawson said. “The only other thing we thought of was that a dog had gotten into a fight with her when she got outside. There’re lots of stray animals out there, and so maybe they got into a scuffle over food.”
Camilla ended up having surgery on her neck but was soon recovering in a foster home. With her foster family, she learned how to trust people once again. And when she was ready, she was adopted into a loving home.
