Group chants “Break the chains” in encouragement as neglected dog gets closer to his freedom
Animal abuse and neglect come in many forms. This includes physical abuse, neglect in the form of being left on a chain, and abandonment, among other atrocities by uncaring owners. For dog rescue volunteers, it is a daily struggle to help abused animals who find themselves in these situations.
If not for the work of these volunteers, these animals might not have a second chance at life.
Help arrives for an abandoned dog
When a volunteer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis in Missouri found a dog chained up in a backyard, the dog’s ribs were showing. The dog, later named Cobalt because of his beautiful, bright blue eyes, had been abandoned when his owner had moved and left Cobalt to die on a chain.
He had been left to face the elements alone, and no one knew how long it had been since Cobalt had last eaten.
Break the chains
When the volunteer, named Donna, arrived, she immediately put some treats on the ground for the poor, abused animal. As Cobalt devoured the first food he had probably had in a long time, Donna worked to free him using a pair of bolt cutters.
As Donna struggles to cut the thick chain, you can hear a neighbor in the background of the video shot of the incident shouting out, “Break the chains!”
As Donna continues to try and cut the chain, she yells back, “I am!”
Cobalt is finally free
As Cobalt strains against the chain, he is finally free. Taking Cobalt to her vehicle to transport him to get medical attention, he rips open the bag of dog food inside, devouring the food hungrily.
Soon, Cobalt is on his way, a free dog who will never have to live a life on a chain again, all thanks to volunteers like Donna.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis
The sole purpose of Stray Rescue of St. Louis is to rescue stray animals in need of care, like Cobalt. Once they have them in their care, volunteers provide these animals with the necessary medical attention they need and work to get them back to full health.
Once the animals are ready, the organization works to find a loving home for them.

Cobalt today
As for Cobalt, once he was well enough, he was placed in a foster home where he could receive the love and attention he so badly needed. Renamed Akira, he finally found his forever home and is now living the good life with a caring owner.
And while he still has to deal with medical issues arising from his neglect, such as heartworms, Akira is, thankfully, free of his chains.
