Man went to adopt pit bull at shelter – but she refused to let go of her best friend
Dogs are very loyal. They’re loyal to their humans and to their fellow dogs.
Dogs are social creatures, which they learned from being part of a pack. They depend on other members of their pack to survive. This is their survival mechanism.
Loyalty will keep dogs alive.
That’s why when dogs find their best friend, whether they’re dogs, cats, or humans, they will be there for each other for life.
That’s the case with three-year-old Merrill and eight-year-old Taco. They’re both dogs waiting to be adopted at Rocket Dog Rescue in Oakland, CA.
Rocket Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer nonprofit group “dedicated to saving homeless and abandoned animals from euthanasia in overcrowded Bay Area shelters.” This is the place where animals get a second chance at life.
That’s why Merrill and Taco were at Rocket Dog Rescue, to get a new life.
And they’re also the most unlikely pair of best friends. Merrill is a big Pitbull mix and Taco is a small Chihuahua.
Merrill is a loving and obedient dog while Taco loves to have so much attention and says hi to everyone.
Their friendship started when the doctors had to perform life-saving surgery on Merrill. During her recovery, Taco stayed by her side to comfort her.
Since then, they have stayed by each other’s side. Literally.
“These two love each other more than any bonded pair the shelter has ever seen. They cry when [they] leave each other’s side,” Rocket Dog Rescue wrote about their friendship.
This prompted Rocket Dog Rescue to pair them up in their adoption listing.
“This dynamic duo has lost their family, their home, and now we can’t let them lose each other!” Rocket Dog Rescue added.
Now, no one can adopt Merrill without taking Taco and vice versa.
And that was the case when a prospective dad came to Rocket Dog Rescue to adopt Merrill. “Dad” fell in love with Merrill and wanted to adopt her.
But Merrill refused to leave Taco behind and Taco refused to let anyone take Merrill away from him. Both of them started crying and it moved “Dad” to tears.
He had never seen such a strong friendship between dogs before.
He decided he was going to adopt both Merrill and Taco, which received cheers all around from Merrill and Taco to the shelter’s volunteers.
Merrill and Taco were so happy! Not only were they going to be together, but they’re also together forever in their home with their parents.
How lucky are these two!
And in their new home, they share so much love and get so much love in return. And the best part about their new home is they get to meet and play with other dogs and other humans and kids, too.
When they arrived at their new home, they were so happy to find out they have instant human siblings. And when Merrill and Taco are not in each other’s arms, they’re snuggled up in their siblings’.
According to the shelter, Merrill and Taco have lived very hard lives.
Breeders used Merrill to breed dogs, which took a toll on her body. Her uterus has to be removed by the doctors so she could live.
Taco has a lot of health problems, including a lung problem, which has caused heart problems for him, too.
Getting them adopted would have been such a struggle. That’s why they’re always grateful to their human parents for stepping into the shelter and bringing them into their homes.
