If you have a dog and want to add a baby to your family, or the other way around, there are some steps that you can take to ensure that both stay safe and get along.

Start by making a plan, including training your dog to be around a baby when the day arrives for the dog or baby to join the household.

When it comes to your dog, make sure that you have good verbal control over them so that you can easily command them to stop the activity they are doing if needed. You should also get your dog used to the new schedule that happens when a baby joins the family.

Finally, expose your dog to the sounds and smells of a new baby as much as possible by exposing them to baby products or the sounds of a baby. That way when your baby does arrive, the dog is somewhat used to the things that they will encounter.

As for your child, depending on their age, you can teach them not to grab a dog unnecessarily, which can lead to them hurting the dog and causing them to react negatively. For young babies, you should supervise them when your dog is around them. This allows you to easily intervene if needed.

By working with both your baby and your dog, you help to ensure that they develop a lifetime friendship while at the same time making sure that no one gets hurt during their interactions.
