Two dogs wake owners in the middle of the night — end up saving a woman’s life

Dogs are very alert animals. Their sense of hearing and smell allows them to detect things that humans cannot. Some might say that their senses are uncanny, even to the point where they can detect an approaching car four times farther away than a human can.

When two dogs in Michigan started acting strangely in the middle of the night, at first their owners didn’t take notice. But, due to their persistence, they ended up saving a life.

It all started when dog owners Lonnie and Susan Chester were fast asleep in bed. Their two Labradoodles, named Adam and Eva, began barking in the middle of the night.

At first, the couple ignored the two as they snuggled into their bed on the cold winter night. This wouldn’t last for very long, though.

Soon, Adam and Eva were tugging on Lonnie’s sleeve, trying to get him up. As he got up to see what was wrong, he noticed that their actions were pointing toward the front door. It was almost as if the two were begging to be let outside. Realizing that something was wrong, Lonnie let them out and then followed them.

“Adam never tugged on my clothes before, so I was a cautious about letting them out because I didn’t know if there was anything out there,” Lonnie told MLive.

Adam and Eva immediately ran for the home’s driveway. Confused, Lonnie tried to determine what the dogs were going on about. Then he saw the body beside his truck. Running over, he found an elderly woman, dressed only in her nightgown, lying in the snow.

“She looked up at me and said, ‘I’m so cold,'” Lonnie said. “I have no idea how long she had been out there. She must have been terrified.”

Lonnie brought her in and called 911

Picking her up, Lonnie brought her indoors and covered the freezing woman with warm blankets on the couch before calling 911. Heavily disoriented, the frail older woman and the couple waited for police to arrive.

Upon their arrival, Lonnie and Susan learned that the woman’s family had been searching for her.

Believed to be suffering from dementia, the older woman had wandered outside on the cold night and had become lost. Fortunately, Adam and Eva were there to save her. Without their timely intervention, the older woman could have possibly died. Instead, she was quickly reunited with her worried family.

The incident left Lonnie and Susan looking at Adam and Eva in a new light. Now, in addition to being the dogs that they loved so much, they were also heroes in the neighborhood.
