Dog who had turned to ‘stone’ finds someone to break his tough outer shell
Most stray dogs we find on the streets are not healthy.
Since they are neglected and have to fend for themselves, we often find them with an infection, illness, or injury.
One of the common situations among stray dogs is having mange caused by mites.
This skin disease would often result in extensive skin damage, losing their fur and causes scabs especially if not treated properly.
This stray dog had a mange so bad, it made him look like he was made out of stone.
Crumb is an African wild dog living off the streets of De Doorns, South Africa.
The people in the neighborhood refer to him as the “Stone Dog” because of how he looks.
The only remaining fur he had was this thin streak running down his spine which made him look like a hyena.
Concerned citizens called Sidewalk Specials to have him rescued.
The organization has a unit based in De Doorns and does dog rescues and mass sterilizations.
Rachael led the operation of catching and rescuing Crumb, but he was always feisty making it difficult to catch him.
It took Rachael and her team eight months to complete the rescue!
Crumb still ran away from them at first, but a man in the area stopped him and pressed down a plastic bottle on his neck to scruff him down.
This gave the rescuers time to put him on leash and settle him down.
He resisted at first, but suddenly stopped after he realized they weren’t going to hurt him.
Crumb finally got the love and gentleness he deserved.
They took him to the vet for a thorough checkup and to start treating his mange.
He got some food and a much needed bath, and they brought him to his foster home.
Despite being a stray all his life, he remained calm in his new environment.
It was like Crumb realized he was getting a life upgrade.
He had a bed, a toy, lots of food, and even more love for his tiny heart.
The best part was he was safe.
They dressed him in silly outfits, and Crumb couldn’t care less.
No matter how silly his hoomans are for the even-sillier outfits, he knew that his life was better than it was. In just a few months, he looked like a different dog.
The mission wasn’t done yet as they were aiming to find him a fur-ever home.
His fosters took him to the beach where they arranged for a meet-and-greet with his new mommy.
They found someone who was interested in Crumb, and crossed their fingers that it would be a success.
Thankfully, it was love at first sight for Crumb and Linda.
Linda was greeted by him with happy tail wags and kisses and that was enough for her to decide she was bringing him home to New York.
There, she introduced him to a world he have yet to get used to.
He didn’t know how to play or even cuddle, but once she introduced him to her other dog, Willow, Crumb broke out of his shell.
Whenever Linda takes them out for a walk, Crumb has this little trot and holding his head high as if saying, “I’m not a dump dog anymore.”
