Adorable donkey grows up with German shepherds and thinks he’s one of the pack

Donkeys aren’t typically thought of as energetic, playful or even particularly loving. Most often they are portrayed as stiff, stubborn and slow. But anyone who knows Walter the Donkey would agree that he’s shattering these preconceptions.

When he was born, Walter the donkey was rejected by his mom. This happens sometimes. In this case, it was because she was too young to bond with him and nurse.

The Bureau of Land Management and Oatman, AZ locals spent 10 hours trying to get his mama to take him in, but nothing worked.

That is when Kelly and Brad Blake were contacted to see if they could help. The Blakes have a reputation for rescuing animals that need support.

“Nothing was working, so we were called and asked if we would like to adopt him. Of course, we said yes!”

As rough as Walters start may have been, this donkey wasn’t down on his luck for long.

He arrived at their home hungry and neglected, but the couple showered their baby donkey with plenty of love, and Walter truly connected with his humans.

Shortly after settling in at the Blake residence, Walter was introduced to his new animal companions, three German shepherd siblings!

His three German shepherd siblings fell in love with him, and they bonded extremely well.

So well, in fact, Walter may have never realized that he is different from his K9 companions. As a young and impressionable donkey, Walter picked up on their behavior and began to do the same!

“We have three German shepherds and they all took to baby Walter from day one. They have helped us raise him and teach him house manners.”

Life at the Blakes home is beautiful. Walter has grown to a healthy 150 pounds and lives in the house just like one of the dogs.

He has picked up on their doggy behaviors, and it’s evident in the way he relaxes and gets excited. When he sees one of his human owners after they’ve been away, he jumps around exactly how a dog would!

When Brad Blake returned home from a business trip, Walter the donkey was thrilled!

Walter galloped up to his Dad and pranced in a circle around him before nuzzling him just like a dog. This is some totally atypical donkey behavior.

“Walter acts as though he is a dog. He wags his tail and gets excited when we come home. He hops and brushes his body against me to love on him. He even lays on the couch next to me for naps. Walter runs around with our shepherds as though he is one of the pack.”

As unusual as this scene may be, it is just plain endearing. Walter’s love for his family is as beautiful as any.

Watler’s parents also often share Walter’s antics on his personal Facebook page. People love seeing what he’s up to.

Recently, he has even shared his compassion as an emotional support donkey, working with several charities.
