Donnie Osmond wouldn’t be where he is today without wife who stayed when he lost millions
In the world of entertainment, it can be rare to find a couple who have stood the test of time. And yet, there are couples like this who do exist.
Like Donnie and Debbie Osmond.
Donny Osmond started his entertainment career at 13 years old as a teen music star.
He became a teen heartthrob and was on the cover of teenage magazines all over the world. He could have any girl he wanted.
“I remember being chased a lot, mostly in England,” Osmond said. “It was Osmondmania over there. Once we had to hide under a table in a restaurant because there were so many screaming fans rushing after us.”
But Donny didn’t want any girl.
He wanted the girl for him.
And Donny wanted Debbie.
Debbie was the first girl he really liked. They met when Donny was 15 years old and Debbie was dating his older brother, Jay.
Their relationship didn’t become a problem but it could become a problem with his hordes of fans.
Donny’s father, George, was against the relationship. It wasn’t because he didn’t like Debbie but he knew Donny’s fans wouldn’t like it.
They decided to keep their relationship a secret from the public to protect his reputation.
Three years after they started dating, they knew they wanted something more lasting.
He knew Debbie was the one.
“By the time I was 19, I knew I was in love and had to do something right for me. When I told my dad, he said, ‘Well, there goes your career, but this is ushering in your personal life’,” Donny recalled.
Donny and Debbie got married.
They tied the knot at the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 8, 1978.
And in January 1979, when their variety show, ‘Donny and Marie,’ ended, Donny announced that he was a married man.
Sure enough, what his father told him came true.
His fans disappeared overnight.
The Osmond family also lost millions of their money because of poor investments. Donny had lost his career.
And through it all, Debbie was there to support him. She never left his side.
Debbie stood by him through all the highs and lows. She was with him when his Broadway production premiered and closed on the same night.
She was also with him when he was gripped with anxiety when he was the lead actor of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ on tour.
“Debbie said, ‘Why don’t you go out there tonight and do an average show?’ It ended up being the best show I ever did because I gave myself an opportunity to make a mistake,” Donny shared.
Through everything, Debbie stood by Donny.
All this made Donny realize that even if he loses “everything,” as long as he has family by his side, he still has everything.
Now, all of his five sons are married and they have 13 grandchildren to spoil.
“That’s what balances my life out,” Donny said. “Family is the most important thing, because the curtain will come down eventually, and then what do you have?”
