Homesick dog escapes daycare and runs 2 miles home to ring doorbell while owners on vacation

It ain’t easy being left behind while your family goes to vacation.

Most of us just aren’t comfortable being home alone, and there’s nothing wrong in admitting that.

The same can be said for family pets. Animals just don’t cope with things exactly the way we do. Instead of sitting on the couch or taking a nap to pass the time, sometimes they’ve got to scratch up the walls or make a mess on the living room floor.

When Dexter the dog here was to stay behind while his parents went on vacation, he made it clear he wasn’t used to it.

His dad, Jeremy, was on vacation trip in Las Vegas that little Dexter couldn’t tag along on. So Jeremy booked for Dexter to stay at a doggy daycare while he was gone.

Spending the week making new friends, both human and dog, sounds like it should be enough to keep Dexter busy.

Though it seems like Jeremy underestimated just how attached Dexter was to him and their home.

Dexter ended up very far away from home. The doggy daycare he was dropped at was 2 miles away. Seems like a pretty daunting distance for a dog to be from his house.

Dexter, however, proved that he couldn’t be kept away from home even if people tried.

Somehow, he snuck out of Doggy Daycare and ran the entire 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) back to his house.

That’s right, Dexter knew the way back somehow. He ran through all the pedestrians, roads, and winding neighborhood back to his home.

There, he ran up to the front door. This is where Jeremy found out, thanks to the doorbell camera he had installed.

With the app that works with it, he got a notification that someone was at his door.

Rather than see a delivery or an intruder, he instead saw little Dexter at the door. All happy, and clearly not in doggy daycare.

PEOPLE.com picked up the story, where Jeremy shared a few words about Dexter and the whole thing.

“We adopted Dexter to be a watchdog for my wife while I traveled, and he takes that job VERY seriously, so that’s probably why he was so determined to come home.”

Obviously, no one was home yet and a dog couldn’t just be left outside.

So Jeremy talked to Dexter over the speaker, and kept the pooch busy until a friend came by to get the dog.

A blizzard was approaching, which meant the doorbell app giving him a heads up couldn’t have been timed better.

“Previously, it made me feel safe knowing that whenever anyone came to our doorstep, we would be notified of it. But now, I truly believe that the Ring Doorbell saved my dog’s life. Without it, he may have been stuck outside and wouldn’t have been able to find a warm spot to stay safe.”

At least he’d be happy once Jeremy came home. Besides, staying with a friend of your dad beats daycare anytime, right?
