Compassionate "Street Vet" and his team offer free medical care to homeless people's pets

As Dr. Kwane says, puppies are the reason why every vet becomes a vet. And this vet simply adores them. His face lights up every time he meets a new patient in his surgery or in the street.

Indeed, some of Dr. Kwane’s patients live in the street, but they’re not strays as your first guess may have been.

The pets we’re talking about do have owners, but they just happen to be homeless, thus making the street their home.

A couple of years ago, the vet and his team decided to organize a project that will be about taking care of homeless people’s pets.

People who live on the street often struggle with mental issues as well, whether there is a pre-existing problem or simply the fact that their life has gotten to this point takes a toll on their mental health.

During those hard times of fighting depression or any other issue, having a pet around can be a lifesaver.

But in most cases, homeless people can’t afford to take their pets to the vet, so if the animals have any health issues, they often go unnoticed, untreated, and eventually lead to premature death.

And the solution to this was given by Dr. Kwane and his team who started the Street Vet project, through which they help animals that belong to homeless people or people who face the risk of homelessness.

“We are committed to protecting the human-animal bond that is so vital to the livelihood of pets and the people who love them. Leading with compassion, kindness, and no judgements, will we seek out and assist the pets and people who need it most,” they write on their website.

But, although the project only started in 2020 officially, Dr. Kwane has been working on it for a decade. The man has been offering free medical treatment to animals that belong to homeless people and, at some point, he realized that this could become something more concrete than that.

The project is led by Dr. Kwane, but he is also assisted by his experienced team, as well as volunteer vets who are inspired by the good cause.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for people having hard times, for whatever reason- I don’t judge. It’s the pets that I worry about,” Dr. Kwane says.

And it is obvious that for those people going through hard times, their pets are the reason why they wake up every morning in order to fight for a better future.

As one of the homeless pet owners puts it, his dog is his therapy.

And, while we ofter believe that animals are the ones that need us the most, it is really people who depend on their pets when they go through hardships.

Thankfully, there are people like Dr. Kwane and his team who make sure that those people will have their best friends around for a long time.
