Dragonflies act as a natural mosquito repellent – this is what you need in your garden to attract them
Let’s face it, everybody hates musquitoes. They’re annoying, they sting and we just want to get rid of them as soon as possible when we see one. Bug repellent spray is one option, but they’re expensive, not always biologically friendly, and you have to reapply bug spray pretty often. It seems like a lot of work just to keep mosquitoes out of your backyard, isn’t it?
Luckily, there is a more natural solution that deals with mosquitoes in a very efficient manner: dragonflies.
Did you know that these dragonflies actually love mosquitoes? Well, they love eating them, at least. In fact, just a single one of these dragonflies is able to eat no less than a hundred of those pesky mosquitos in a single day. And if you’re concerned that only full-grown dragonflies have an appetite for them, there’s no reason to worry. Larvae of dragonflies will actually be able to consume even more.
An added benefit: dragonflies are absolutely beautiful and won’t irritate you nearly as much as mosquitoes would.
However, you can’t just spawn a bunch of dragonflies at your will to deal with this problem, but you can definitely improve your garden and plant some dragonfly-friendly things. And don’t worry, the plants are actually quite beautiful and will look great in any garden.
These four flowers will attract dragonflies naturally, and they’ll look good doing it.
1) Dwarf Sagittaria
Okay, we’ll admit that the pictures of the dwarf Sagittaria don’t particularly look exciting, and one might think that it’s some sort of grass. However, it’s actually a pretty amazing plant and also an aquatic one. You’ll need hard water and a bit substrate that’s high in nutrients, but it’s pretty easy to grow nonetheless. All you need is some water in your garden.
2) Meadow Sage
No water? No problem. The Meadow Sage will do the trick just fine too. A group of these is often called a ‘Blue Hill’ because of the beautiful sight it gives when there’s a whole bunch of them planted together. These blue hills – which actually are more purple, but what’s in a name, right? – are very easy to plant, you’ll just need sunlight and a bit of accompanying shade. It doesn’t need a whole lot of water, meaning it’s suitable for drier soil or weather conditions.
3) Black-Eyed Susan
If you’re a newbie gardener or would just like something that low maintenance, these plants are absolutely perfect. Not only are they low maintenance, but they also aren’t picky about soil types, so you can pretty much grow them anywhere. All you need is a bit of water now and then, as well as some natural sunlight.
4) Yarrow White Wildflower
Did you know that this type of flower was actually once used because of their medicinal purposes? It turns out these plants are pretty versatile because they do an awesome job at attracting dragonflies as well. The growing conditions are a little bit more specific, however. You’ll need more sunlight than your average plant, and the soil can’t be too moist or nutrient-rich. Sometimes less is more.
You can get all of these four flower seeds pretty easily at your specialized store or even online, and they don’t take too long to grow. In other words, you can attract dragonflies and get rid of mosquitoes in your garden in just a couple of weeks!
