Man too drunk to drive orders an Uber to take injured bird to rescue center

This Uber driver was compelled to pick up a client who chirps but doesn’t talk in place of the usual customer.

Uber driver Christy Gunn received a message for a pickup on Saturday night, but when she got there, she felt anxious. That’s because her four male passengers, all of whom she thought were preparing to board her car, were plainly drunk.

Things didn’t look great at face value.

“I got there and there’s three or four guys standing out in the yard and they’re holding beers,” Christy recounted of that moment. “And I’m like, ‘Oh no. These guys are going to get in my car and I hope they know they can’t bring their beer.’”

But then, the next moments were totally out of the blue. A man approached the window to inform her about an injured Lesser Goldfinch that had fallen from a neighboring tree.

The driver was initially confused.

“Impromptu, sitting in some camp chairs, hanging out, having a few drinks when we had a visitor fall out of the sky,” Tim Crowley, one of the men, said.

Tim stated they wouldn’t drive since they had been drinking. They preferred Christy to transport the bird to the local wildlife refuge instead. We gotta commend their good decisions!

It started out as a joke.

“At first it was a joke, like, ‘Hey, maybe we should just call Uber!’” Tim fondly shared. “Then we were like, ‘No, really. Why not? We’re paying them.’”

The first driver they phoned turned them down after learning about their peculiar request; Christy was the second and, thankfully, the last.

These men also set everything up.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah had been contacted by the guys before Christy arrived, and they had been informed that if they could just get the sick bird to the facility, they could bring him back to health.

As per Christy, as long as the men were willing to pay, she sees no issue bringing the poor bird to its destination.

It’s easy to see how nice these men are.

The wounded bird was then placed inside a box that the men provided to her. Even more thoughtfully, they added some leaves to cushion it so the bird would feel more at ease. The 25-minute trip to the center was then commenced by Christy.

The Lesser Goldfinch reportedly sought to bury itself in the leaves throughout the journey. She switched off the air conditioning and slightly opened the windows to let some warmth in after determining that he might be feeling chilly.

She really took care of the bird.

“The only noise was the chirping,” Christy recounted. “I guess he was happy when I turned off the air conditioning off and rolled the windows down a little bit. I definitely think it was a little too cold for him.”

Christy expressed her gratitude that the men chose to phone her rather than drive to the facility. She commends them for their kindness and righteous ways.

As for the bird, they had named it “Petey” and it survived the whole ordeal. Thanks to the men who found him and Christy who made sure he makes it to the rescue center safe and sound.
