DIY Strawberry Garden
All You Need:
- Tall plastic laundry basket
- Burlap sack (the same size as the basket)
- Potting soil
- Strawberry plants
- Trowel
- Scissors
1. Cut Drainage Hole
You’ll begin by cutting a 2-inch hole on the bottom of your laundry basket to help drain water from the soil. You can use scissors to cut the hole or a drill can make a perfect circle as well. This is an important step because even though strawberries like moist soil, too much water can result in root rot and damage those berries.
2. Burlap Sack
Place the burlap sack inside of the laundry basket like you would a garbage bag. Fold extra burlap over the edge of the laundry basket. The burlap sack helps keep all of the potting soil in place and they can usually be found at any nursery or garden store. But you can also go looking for one at any craft store as well.
3. Fill It Up
Once you’ve lined the laundry basket with a burlap sack you’ll want to fill your laundry basket with potting soil. Then you can cut the access burlap sack off of the laundry basket.
4. Cut Strawberry Holes
You’ll want to start cutting holes in the burlap sack, so you can place your strawberries plants inside. You can start cutting the holes starting in the middle of the laundry basket for your baby strawberries. This also gives you room to grow other plants on top of your strawberries. Be mindful if you’re placing your planter box against a fence or wall when cutting so you don’t take away sunlight from your berries.
5. Plant Those Strawbs!
When your holes are cut you’ll want to place your strawberry plants inside of the holes. No need to plant them deep into the soil just make sure the roots are comfortable in the soil. The burlap helps support their roots.
6. Extra Flowers
To give your strawberry planter box more pizazz you can plant smaller colorful plants right on top. Make sure to choose plants that bloom all summer long like a monarda plant. Plants that help attract pollinators are a great addition to your strawberry planter!
9. Sunshine!
Make sure to place your new strawberry planter in a nice sunny spot. Water regularly as they get adjusted to their new home!
