When some of this mother duck’s babies fell into the sewer, she thought that there was no way of getting them out. Then a passerby came up with a bright idea.

Every mother wants to look out for her children. And that includes most mothers within the animal kingdom.

The mother duck in this story always tries to look out for her children.

But as any mother to more than one child knows, it can be hard to keep track of multiple kids at once.

One day, when the mother and her ducklings were all out on a walk, some of the babies fell between the gaps in a sewer drain cover.

The mother started panicking, not seeing any way to get her children free.

Luckily, a young woman, Mindy, spotted the mother duck’s distress. She inspected a little closer and heard the ducklings’ panicked chirps from the drain cover.

At first, Mindy tried to lift the drain cover off of the ground on her own.

But it was too heavy.

So she called up a friend and went back into her home briefly. Mindy walked out with some kitchen utensils. She hoped that she could grasp the ducklings with some of them.

The friend arrived, and they lifted the cover off successfully.

But when they tried to reach down, the ducklings got scared and hid in the drain.

But Mindy and her friend were now determined to get the babies back to their mother. So they bought some bread, tore it up and threw it into the sewer.

The ducklings emerged from the drain and started nibbling on the bread.

As they were doing this, Mindy reached down with a pair of tongs and carefully but firmly grasped one of the ducklings.

She handed the baby to her friend and reached down for another duckling.

She saved three of the ducklings. But the rest had hidden away again.

Soon, some city officials arrived to rescue the remaining ducklings.

They had a professional device, that was like a net. They placed it into the drain, along with some of the torn-up bread. But the ducks wouldn’t come out.

The remaining ducklings ran even further into the drain.

So more city officials came. They decided to try and make some water flow down the drain via a fire hydrant, flushing the ducklings out of their hiding place and into the place where they had initially fallen.

The water flowed, and the ducklings got swept into the exposed area of the drain.

Mindy reached down and clutched another duckling with her tongs. She quickly got out of the drain and placed the duckling into a Tupperware box. She reached down one more time and got another one out.

But the final trapped duckling had run back into the drain again.

By now, other rescuers had manned other drain openings. The last duckling emerged from one of these and a rescuer reached down and grabbed them.

At last, all the ducklings were safe.

By now, the mother duck and her saved ducklings had hidden from all of the people. So Mindy and her friend looked for them.

Mindy saw the mother duck and the ducklings in a nearby stream.

The woman placed the ducklings at the water’s edge. Quickly, the ducklings rushed back to their mother, and the mother rushed back to them.

Clearly, they were overjoyed to be reunited once more.

What an amazing rescue!
