Toss drumsticks in a slow cooker – 3 hours later, you've ever had chicken wings this good before

Chicken wings bring people together as few other foods can. When are you more vulnerable than when you are up to your ears in sauce and motioning towards the paper towels, hoping someone helps you out? They combine crispiness, flavor, and meatiness all into one, little, bite-sized package. While we normally only order these with pizza or at a restaurant, they can be super easy to make at home, without any special kitchen gadgets!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup of hot sauce (Franks is traditional here but feel free to experiment)
  • 3 tablespoons of honey
  • 4 minced cloves of garlic
  • 5 tablespoons of butter, cut into chunks
  • 3 pounds of chicken drumettes
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper

Directions

  1. To begin, in a small bowl, whisk together your cornstarch and apple cider vinegar, making sure to get out any lumps from the cornstarch. The cornstarch will be activated by the heat and add a silkiness to the sauce, helping it to stick to the wings and thicken.
  2. Pour it into your slow cooker, along with your honey, hot sauce, garlic, and butter, stirring it all together. This will make the buffalo sauce the wings will cook in.
  3. With your sauce mixed in the bottom of the slow cooker, add your wings along with your salt and pepper. Using a spoon (or your hands), mix the wings in the bowl, ensuring the sauce coats them evenly.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and put it on high for about 3 hours. You can check on them around the 2.5-hour mark to make sure they aren’t too tender.
  5. Just before they are falling off the bone, turn the cooker off. Take an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet and place the wings on it.
  6. Place them on the sheet under a preheated broiler. This will give them some crispiness! Make sure you keep an eye on them, however, as the sugar can easily burn under the broiler.

Conclusion

This is a super easy and hands-off way to make some awesome chicken wings! This is a basic recipe for buffalo wings, but you can always experiment and make your own sauces! I love Asian style chicken wings and this method would go great with a similar sauce. As a note, the oven at the end is optional but extra delicious if you like a little bit of that crispiness a good chicken wing has, but you could totally eat these right out of the slow cooker.

Try these when you want restaurant-style wings in the comfort and ease of your own home! Don’t forget to serve with a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing and a good beer. Enjoy these east and delicious wings!
