Some of the all-time greats in music are often referenced by how many albums they sold. But the artists that changed the world, the ones that changed popular culture, those are the ones that go down in history. The names you think of when you think about musicians that changed our world are likely The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zepplin. There are so many more.

What about adding Ed Sheeran to that list?

I don’t see why he wouldn’t arguably be a part of the conversation. Ed Sheeran was born and raised in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. His parents worked as curators but, even at a young age, they knew Sheeran was a natural when it came to music.

Sheeran sang at a local church choir at the age of four and learned how to play the guitar shortly after. It wasn’t until high school that he started to get into songwriting.

But even then, his classmates voted him to be the ‘most likely famous.’

Throughout his career, Sheeran has had more than 10 songs go into the Top Ten of the UK singles chart. He has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one other world’s best selling musical artists.

Ed claims a number of musical influences on his career. The list is very eclectic, including The Beatles, Eminem, Westlife, and Damien Rice to name a few. Maybe that’s why he has been so popular with so many people.

An Elvis All-Star Tribute concert, which aired back in February of 2019, was another platform to let the young man showoff his talents.

Ed Sheeran selected the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by, of course, the King, Elvis Presley.

Elvis Presley has a huge list of accomplishments and some people consider him the greatest musician of all-time. You know they wouldn’t just ask anyone to take on a cover song and make it incredible.

In the video, recorded in October of 2018, you see the modestly-dressed Sheeran taking the stage with his acoustic guitar like he usually does. It’s pretty uncommon to see a huge pop star not have an outrageous clothing style. Maybe this is another reason people feel they can relate to him.

The setting appears to be inside a church and Sheeran has a large choir behind him separated into two groups. The music starts with just Ed strumming his guitar and singing like a solo artist. The setting makes sense, as the lush reverb of the church carries each note.

Half of the choir begins adding oohs and aahs. The light humming is a great accompaniment, allowing Sheeran’s voice to carry the song without obstructing.

“Wise men say only fools rush in. But I can’t help falling in love with you.”

The chorus to the song is so beautiful, but the dynamic in the vocal that Elvis originally recorded makes singing it very difficult. Sheeran nails all the vocal challenges put forth by the song. The lows are pretty impressive.

Fans of Ed Sheeran love this song. Even people that don’t care for his music have to realize his talent during this performance. So many times with pop music, the image of the artist is the focus. Time and time again, the talent takes a back seat to the look.

It’s so refreshing to see that Sheeran is a legit musician. Talented with a capital ‘T’.

It would seem everything he touches turns into gold.
