Elderly man’s lawnmower is stolen so he posts a sign to get the thieves’ attention
85-year-old Gordon Blakeslee thought his lawnmower would be safe if he left it on his lawn.
But it wasn’t. Someone stole it.
Gordon was not pleased with this at all either. Gordon really enjoyed using his riding mower. Cutting his grass had been part of his routine for years.
When the pandemic hit, Gordon went to go live with his kids. This meant he wasn’t able to cut his grass for a while. When he returned to his home, Gordon found that his prized lawnmower had been stolen.
“That was something that was precious to him, everything that he has, has value to him,” said Candace Blakeslee, Gordon’s daughter-in-law. “If it’s not broken, it doesn’t need to be repaired or replaced.” – WBNG
“I want it back,” said Gordon. “I used to work out here, when my wife was alive, I used to work out there all day long.”
Gordon sends a message to the lawnmower thieves.
Gordon decided to send a message to the people who stole his mower. He got out some cardboard and a marker and created a sign.
“Bring Back My Mower
I am 85 Years Old! I can’t push,” the sign read.
Gordon was hoping that the thieves would find it in their hearts to bring back his mower.
“I didn’t realize how much he would miss it until I came here and saw the sign,” Candace continued. “It melted my heart.”
An anonymous donor does something incredible.
News of Gordon’s story spread around the community and through the media. After hearing of Gordon’s plight, an anonymous person decided to help. A new lawnmower, the same red Craftsman model Gordon had previously, was delivered to the local Sheriff’s office. It was to be given to Gordon.
The lawnmower delivered to Gordon was not the same one he had stolen from him, but it was the same model only newer. No one knows who donated it to him.
“I couldn’t be any more thankful. With everything going on, I know he’s happier than happy to have a mower back,” said Garrett Blakeslee, Gordon’s grandson. – WBNG
Gordon responds to the generous donation.
“Thank you, what else can I say, I really appreciate it,” said Gordon. “It’s got some new upgrades to it, that’s a lot better than my old one.”
Gordon says that the main thing he enjoys about cutting the grass is that it gets him out of the house and into the fresh air.
“It gets me out, get some fresh air, gets me some exercise. That’s the main thing. Sit [inside], and you don’t last long,” he said.
Anonymous donor reminds everyone there are still some good people out there.
Having his riding mower stolen must have been an upsetting situation for Gordon. It must have hurt his faith in humanity that someone would do that. Someone making an anonymous donation without seeking any credit, however, is a reminder that some people truly want to do good things for good people.
“There are still some good people out there,” said Gordon.
Thanks to an anonymous donor, Gordon can get outside, cut his grass, and know that there are still some good folks out there.
