Tiktok has definitely become a worldwide phenomenon since the majority of teenagers, and even adults, spend most of their time using social media. The video platform is widely used to share dancing videos, funny clips, and inspirational videos – such as the story of this elderly pizza delivery man who recently became “TikTok famous”.

Meet 89-year old Derlin Newey from Weber County, Utah. He’s one of the delivery guys at Papa John’s in Roy and a particular avid customer always requests for him to deliver their delicious pizza.

As we all know, there are a lot of places where pizza can be delivered from but whenever Carlos Valdez gets a craving, he always chooses Papa John’s.

“I love pineapple on my pizza,” he said with a laugh. “That’s the only thing my wife loves.”

The Valdez’s have gotten to know Newey from his deliveries to their house. The couple also mentioned that they just not order from the same pizza joint because it has the best taste, but also because they’ve grown to like Newey.

“Hello, are you looking for some pizza?” is a phrase Newey uses every time he delivers to them.

Not only have the Valdez’s grow fond of Newey, but they also record his deliveries in TikTok. The videos became so popular that they suddenly have over 53,000 followers.

“It’s insane. Everybody loves him,” said Valdez to KSLTV.

However, one thought that keeps coming up on the comments section, is why an 89-year-old man was delivering pizzas. Most of the people who viewed the videos commented that they were sad for him.

“Somebody at that age should not be working that much,” said Valdez.

Because of this, Valdez came up with a brilliant idea of asking donations from their followers thinking that they could at least raise a couple of dollars for Newey.

Instead, they received way more than what they’ve expected.

“Collectively as a TikTok community, we all came together, and we were able to raise $12,000 for this amazing person,” said Valdez.

Tuesday morning, the couple went to Newey’s house this time to make the surprise delivery for the elderly man.

“Good morning, dude! How you doing?” said Valdez when Newey opened the door.

He thought that they were going to give him a shirt that says “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?” but he had absolutely no idea that he will receive something far better.

“We collectively collected a gift for you, and I’m here to deliver that gift to you on behalf of the TikTok community,” said Valdez.

Of course, he didn’t know what TikTok was as he asked:

“Is that an online group you communicate with each other through the telephone?”

Then, Valdez gave him a white envelope with $12,000 in cold cash.

Newey was so surprised by what was happening that tears come running down his face.

“How do I ever say thank you? I don’t know what to say.”

Turns out, Newey is living alone in his mobile home and started delivering pizzas to sustain himself and pay bills as his social security isn’t enough.

“I work about 30 hours a week. I don’t know what to say, except thank you,” said Newey.

Now, with the money from generous strangers, maybe he doesn’t need to work so hard anymore.

“This couldn’t have gone any better,” said Valdez. “He needed this. I’m just glad we could help him. We just need to treat people with kindness and respect the way he does. He stole our hearts.”

Indeed, there’s nothing better than delivering kindness and generosity to those who are in need.
