Elderly shopper is embarrassed after “accident” but then strangers step in

In an emergency, one would hope that strangers would come to one’s aid. But what if the situation was more of a “personal emergency” and somewhat embarrassing?

Fortunately, there are good people in this world who are willing to assist others in those same situations too.

This story demonstrates that people are inherently good.

Also, one’s faith in humanity does not need to be restored because it should never have changed in the first place. People have always been good, and they will continue to be so.

This story begins with a lovely lady named Lisa Lemming Jackson.

According to Woman’s World, Jackson works at a senior home care center in Georgia, United States. As a result, she is sensitive to the needs of the elderly.

She was in a Kroger in Rome, Georgia when her intuition kicked in.

Jackson noticed an elderly man in one of the store aisles and smiled as she walked by. There was something in the man’s eyes that indicated he needed help. Jackson decided to check on him.

The man began to cry out of shame and embarrassment at this point.

Jackson later shared the story on social media, where it quickly became popular.

She wrote in a Facebook post:

“Just spent 2 hours with an elderly man at Kroger. It started with me just smiling at him, making eye contact. As I walked past him he looked like he needed something.”

“I went back and asked him if I could help him. Tears welled up in his eyes and he said,

‘I have colon cancer and I have had a really bad accident, if I get up out of this cart everyone will know. What should I do?'”

Jackson was heartbroken to witness this man’s anguish.

Thankfully, she and the Kroger staff were ready to assist.

The staff went right to work getting the man what he needed to clean up. They even gave him some dry clothes to wear so he could feel more at ease.

“The look of his dignity lost left me with a lump in my throat. From that moment on, Kroger staff quickly fetched us wipes, undergarments and discreetly took him to their employer bathroom Area where he was given clothes. He cried and apologized. He said he had to hurry his wife was at home alone,” Jackson explained.

While the man felt his government and the country for which he had given his life had failed him, he was relieved that his fellow humans had not.

“When we walked to the register we found his groceries all bagged and somehow paid for. He cried harder. He said he fought in Vietnam and Korean War and loved his country, but up until today, he said he thought his country forgot about him,” Jackson wrote.

Jackson and the man then shared a beautiful moment in which they were both able to connect.

Before they parted ways, the elderly man gave Jackson some “words of wisdom” that she will remember for the rest of her life.

“We both cried and I shared with him my own struggles and fears… He gave me words of wisdom and encouraged me that maybe after all, humanity still does care about one another.”

She concluded her post by writing:

“Today proved it. Thank you Elmer, thank you Kroger and thank you God for the lesson and reminder I received today.”

You never know when a stranger might need your support, whether it’s in an emergency or simply because they could use some kindness.

It’s good to be willing to help others – and to believe that strangers will do the same as well.

Unsurprisingly, Jackson’s post has warmed hearts all over the internet, with over 56K shares. And one commended her inspiring action:

“Thank you !!!!! What a blessing you were right on time.”
